I have to visit the hygienist every 4 months. Or so my hygienist tells me.
Not only do I hate the pain it also costs £75 for the pleasure. Or did.
It’s now £97 and have to pay £50 deposit in advance in case you miss that appointment. I’ve never missed one in my life.
Is it just me or is this just a tad steep?
South coast.

Thinking of looking round for a new one.

Thanks

It’s a big increase but depends on type of practice. Hygienist at specialist periodontists can be £150.

£97 is steep but if it is 30min visits it might be the going rate for the area. To end I would say.

I used to have a dental plan. It was about £18 pm. For that I got 3 hygienist appointments a year and discounted x rays etc. I was though royally shafted on fillings etc. I’ve now gone back to NHS and my dentist now is nothing like as thorough as the hygienist was.

Worst part of going to the dentist. The bking you get. You flossing, yeah, doesnt look like it, how many times you brush, how may soft drinks do you have. Blah blah.

Just shut up, read out your battleship coordinates and let me go.

Just brush your teeth three times a day, floss them three times a week and use good quality mouthwash twice a day.

No need to see one then in addition to your normal twice yearly visit to the dentist.

Last hygienist I saw was 10 minutes late for the session, called me in did "work"...then after 30 minutes said "I've done a bit and you'll need to come back"...

Me thinking it was all within the quoted session price was the downfall, they wanted and expected me to pay for more "treatment"...pretty disgusted I said bks to you and didn't go back again to said dentist.

Last 2 times it’s a bit painful and I’ve lost at least one filling shortly after.

I’m convinced that it unsettles the teeth, had one last week, lost half a tooth that night and have a loose filling now.

Not having any more.

The hygienist has a place in dental care but I’m pretty certain it’s just upselling most of the time.

I bought a teeth scraping kit off Amazon like they use at the dentist’s. I use a head torch and the little mirror they use with a few scrapers in the mirror every few months and scrap all the plaque build up. I’ve never had to see the hygienist yet and I’m 45. Floss every night and brush teeth daily.

Blimey - my sessions are supposed to be 20 mins but in practice are often 15 mins in the chair, and they're pretty heavy going.

Not sure of the cost - it's on a Denplan monthly payment which is about £30/mth. I go 4 times a year as I get tartar build up no matter what I do. Cost includes 6 monthly dentist check-ups but she is looking in my just beautifully cleaned mouth for literally 90 seconds.

I've noticed the hygienist is doing things like depth checks that the dentist used to do - I'd rather they spent the time cleaning my teeth.

Always amused me when i visited my old dentist years ago and the car park was full of prestige motors.
I go every 6 months but it is a money making scheme, try not to listen to what they say regarding how often you should visit.

I've been told to go to the hygienist on my last check-up. Apparently it's £80 (don't know how long, in Surrey).

I tend to get tartar buildup behind my lower incisors as they're not quite straight, the brushing is a bit uneven there.

I've also bought those dentist tools for DIY scraping to get the worst of it off and to hold off on the hygienist visits.

Can't even get an NHS dentist. Looking at the ''contact your local integrated care board (ICB)'' option to make a complaint

Is it all really required? I don't remember everyone going to the hygienist all the time a little while ago.

Is it meant to help prevent decay? Have our lifestyles changed and we now require it? Are we paying far more to do something painful several times a year (hygienist visit) to delay doing something painful every couple of years (filling)?

I was recommended to go the last time I saw a dentist, but covid arrived so I never bothered.

A hygienist visit isn’t painful and I go twice a year not several times.
Floss and teepee too but feel the hygienist is more important than a dental checkup

You have a special, temporary, shelter for flossing?
