any purpose in getting a medical diagnoses
Discussion
Hi,
I'm 59, pretty much know from teens that something is wrong with reading and writing, maths is fine (great even).
I muddle up b and d, p and q cannot spell, occasionally forget the shape of a letter, write as its spoken, had a grammar school education.
I take a verbal shopping list from a relative and it may end up looking like this:
coalslaw
yogart
Biskits
I struggle seeing in my mind how a word is spelt "who" is quite a good one.
The word I just cannot read is hyperbole, it's always "hyper bowl", when I foung out it's proper pronuciation it made a lot of sense but still read it wrong every time and then have to think how it should be said.
Etc etc
also I have every trait of ADHD, I can go and put the bins out, 2hrs later come back in, Mrs says what took so long and then I'll realise I haven't put bins out, plus endless other examples.
I did mess myself up badly in early life with addiction issues but clean and sober for 26 years.
Life has been pretty good to me, financially I'm Ok. Mentally i'm good.
Quite a few people have said I should get tested for above things, my question is why, what purpose would it serve. Any one else been in this situation later in life and felt any benifit from a test?
I'm pretty used to it now, it doesn't upset or annoy me, not sure I want to be medicated and I'm not after any monetry handout.

I'll make a guess that "quite a few friends" have said get tested because you have mentioned / said something about it?
Meaning, it is on / in your mind in some way.
So, just to keep things very simple - find somewhere credible to get some tests done and the info gained will help reframe your own view of yourself - and you could find yourself in a better place - not that it's bad at the moment, as you say.
In other words, it's more about how you see yourself internally than making any practical moves forward.

Getting a diagnosis may lead toward behaviours that let you live differently with whatever condition you have, dyslexia seems to broadly fit (but I think you know this) so adopting tools like grammerly may help you. Someone that worked for me was able to read much better with a blue background to block writing for example.
So while it might not change any condition you have it may make certain things easier.
