Stupid man has stupid accident.

Out for quick stroll with wife, child and dog.

I pass this height restriction bar (photo) regularly and every time I knock out ten or so pull-ups. I’m 187cm and can just grab hold of bar if I stretch up a bit.

This time reached top of the first pull up and the bar come loose dropping me straight onto my back from maybe 2m. Luckily the bar didn’t hit me and I didn’t hit my head.

Could not breathe. Knew I had winded myself badly so tried to keep very calm and just suck in the tiny bit of air I could. Feel my vision going.

Wife is asking if I’m okay…I’m managing to squeak out..’oooookkkkaayyyy…wiiinnnded’.

She started calling for help and within minutes we had about 8 neighbours and various workers with us. Wife took daughter (6) off to get car. I could wiggle my toes, move my legs so clearly not paralysed. I’ve broken plenty of ribs in the past - didn’t think I had this time.

Got one of guys to help me up and I limped back home (100m) with help.

After 30 mins at home - it hurts! Off to hospital. Straight into emergency unit with 2 docs and a nurse to attend (its not UK).

They confirm; no broken ribs, can raise my arms, blood O2 fine, breathing seems fine…we agreed I’ve just really whacked myself. Sent me home with pain killers and muscle relaxants.

Three days later - bruised elbow and hip coming up. Pain in chest and behind both scapula is bad, really not sleeping well. Struggling to bend down etc. Breathing okay though.

Off to hospital again now. It’s where GPs are based, no appt needed.

Any ideas?

My wife is convinced I’m bleeding to death internally. I think I’ve just smashed myself up bruised and torn muscles and will take weeks to recover. Something in between those two?

Clearly I’m an old idiot. That’s my initial diagnosis.

Sounds like you are battered and bruised and naturally stiff and sore from the impact.

You wouldn't be typing out this thread if you were bleeding to death internally.

Rest well but try and keep mobile. Maybe some light stretches in a few days.

Good luck

What's the first rule of hanging off a bar?

Yes, make sure the bugger will hold your weight.

Deep bruising will vanish in a week.

Bet the dog thought it was great fun you lying on the floor!

Yes - i won a stupid prize.

I’ve used that bar 50+ times before. We think the base of one upright has shifted a few mm, enough for the horizontal to slip out of the v.

Went to hospital. Straight in after blood pressure check to see GP and her nurse. Agreed that if i was damaged internally i would be dead by now.

However, maybe best to check with her colleague in osteo. Assistant took me down there, waited 10 mins; in to see two doctors and nurse. Checked all over, stethoscope etc.

Could do x-rays now but we agreed not much point as i know what broken ribs feel like - having done quite a few over the years. Docs pretty sure it’s just muscle/tissue damage/bruising.

If not feeling a bit better by Friday, come back on Friday.

Prescribed some pain killers and muscle relaxant - picked up in hospital pharmacy.

In and out in 40 mins. Total cost £8.50.

Could have gone through my NHS equivalent for free payment but couldn’t be bothered with extra forms, fingerprint reader etc.

Still bloody hurts though! Rough nights sleep.

Not doing that again.

Films; get thrown off a roof, hit a fire escape several times and land on roof of car: pick yourself up and limp away. I don’t think so… Get kicked in ribs and thrown against a wall or fall through floor onto concrete….yeah.

Mind you osteo doc did make the point that at his age - 26 - he would have fared better than me at 30 years older. He also said; maybe check a bar in future sir. Insolent young whippersnapper!

I’ll live.

On a positive note my daughter doesn’t appear traumatised by seeing her daddy gasping on the floor like a dying fish. Plus I bumped into a new neighbour that had come out to help when i had accident. Lovely Swedish guy - we are going for coffee next week, he has a 6 year old son so could be a new local little friend for my daughter…. Every cloud and all that.

Done similar. Reliving my youth (14 years ago at 16) playing street hockey with my son and his pals.
Hit a stone with my skates and went over on stick.
Gravel rash down one side and 3 broken ribs.
Luckily no parents saw it as i limped into house in shame.

Enjoyed that read smile we’ve all done it OP you will be right in a week.

Reminds me of a sledging incident I had when I hit a stray dog and busted up a rib or two. This was before I had kids so felt like a tit.

Thanks.

Yeah, I’ve done few. Usually running..and usually broken ribs.

Funnily enough I am on a benzodiazepine at bedtime as part of my epilepsy regime.

Stops me having these very quick micro-seizures in my sleep.

I think I’ll be better in a week. Hopefully a bit wiser…..

I slipped over on to a hard floor at work.

Lept up fine and embarrassed as so many people rushed over to see if I was ok.

Told everyone not to worry and went to my floor.

By lunchtime I could barely move. Torso was in pain for a week or more and my hand was agony.

Turned out that I'd broken it. Took a year before it felt ok and could bear weight again.

Note to self, avoid falling over at 60 years old.

We walk amongst normal people!
last week i was renovating a house in the high peak,
the kitchen side was the workbench for the day, and id made myself a brew and put some toast on

then made myself some room by moving the toaster and i grabbed it by thumb on the outside and fingers in the toast slot.

blew the main fuse board ! and electrocuted and burnt my finger

What age do you stop ‘falling over but, instead, ‘have a fall’?

About the time you stop bouncing, and falling over results in a day or more of pain.

You know you've reached that age when you fall over and people look concerned rather than start laughing at you.

Still in a lot of pain. Not really improved at all.

Shortness of breath when bending down.

I’m going to pop to the GP now and get an x-ray.

Must have cracked a few ribs….not that there is anything that can be done about that.
