My 35 year old niece returned fro a holiday in Turkey. 3 weeks later her legs face and back are covered in deep pitted scars. Holes and weeping abscesses which despite doctors best efforts weren’t clearing up.
Eventually she was diagnosed with Aquarium Granuloma, having just googled it, really quite horrific.
Contracted in the hotel swimming pool probably as the other possible causes were not encountered, cleaning aquariums, sea swimming, handling infected fish.
Insufficient chlorine in the pool gives rise to the growth and a simple cut or abrasion allows entry into the body.
Take care people

Good luck to her with her recovery. Just had to spend the last 3 weeks in Istanbul for work, at a supposedly 4-5 star hotel. Swimming pool is disgusting, regularly used by guests with bleeding head wounds after surgery!
Hate to think what is in it as I've never seen staff put any chemical in. Hotel hygiene is well down their list, makes the Spanish look advanced.

That sounds horrific. Just got back from Turkey last Sunday. One thing that struck me what that maintenance and health and safety are not top of their list of priorities.
Which resort was she at?
She went to Antalya. Im not sure I should name the hotel for obvious reasons, perhaps ask insist on a review of the hotels procedures regarding the poolWhich resort was she at?

Never understood the British obsession with going to a third world country for a holiday.
Sounds horrendous, I hope she makes a full recovery.
Would be worth you reading up on what classifies a country being third world.Sounds horrendous, I hope she makes a full recovery.
The issue is maintenance. The same can occur anywhere.

Kudos to whichever medic picked this up.
You could probably work a thousand years as a GP and a hundred as a dermatologist without seeing a case and then it would be a fish tank case with lesions distributed in the dominant hand and forearm giving a better clue to diagnosis.
Initially diagnosed as shingles, but when the condition didn’t respond to treatment they looked deeper. You could probably work a thousand years as a GP and a hundred as a dermatologist without seeing a case and then it would be a fish tank case with lesions distributed in the dominant hand and forearm giving a better clue to diagnosis.
