Had them before on the outside of my little toe, a good soaking and a rub with a pumice stone did the trick then. Now I have another, this time on the right side if my middle toe, so a bit more awkward to do the same and this one REALLY hurts.

I know the main cause is poorly fitted shoes. I've always been a size 9 and try to buy the best shoes I can afford. I rarely wear dress shoes and seem to live in trainers/pumps.

Any tips to get rid and stop them reoccurring? I walk a lot (15-20k steps a day), but right now it gets painful quickly even with a corn plaster on it.

Poorly fitting shoes is only part of the problem.
A corn in between toes is often a 'soft corn' and related to moisture of the skin in between the toes, this can be made worse by certain types of shoe - are your trainers leather? Do you wear socks? (socks will help wick moisture away).
Don't worry about the price of shoes, that's not a reliable indicator of how 'good' they are. Wear shoes that fit, have a wide and deep toe box and preferably have less than a 1 inch heel. Also avoid slip-ons as they are either tighter so they stay on or too sloppy and flop on and off on the foot. Trainers are usually ideal, as long as your skin can breath in them and you wear socks.

If your lesion is a soft corn then it may help to wipe in between your toes daily with surgical spirit for 2 weeks, then every other day long term after that. Surgical spirit is an astringent and will shrink your sweat pores meaning less moisturise on your skin. You could also put a bit of cotton wool in between your toes, (preferably behind the lesion, rather than over it, depending on location) and secure it with surgical tape, change this daily, this will hold the toes slightly apart, reduce pressure and allow the skin to dry.

Thank you.

I normally wear Nike Air trainers or Vans/Converse, always with socks.

I will give surgical spirits a go.

Probably is your footwear, but I had a corn on the outside of my little toe caused by poorly fitting socks according to the chiropodist I saw.

OP - are you sure you are still a size 9? I'm in my 50s and buy a bigger shoe size to what I did when I was in my 20s. I think my feet have gradually squashed into a bigger size. smile That might not be the correct medical explanation but I do wear slightly bigger shoes.
