Depression/Addiction support for young person
Discussion
Hi,
A friend has a young adult child who has been suffering from drug-resistant depression for 18 months or so, which has escalated into alcohol addiction and substance misuse.
Things have recently become more severe and the young person is no longer able to hide the true state of their condition and is now a danger to themselves.
Rock bottom is going to be a difficult place to reach given they direct have direct access to significant sums of money, but the parents are struggling to cope with dealing with this problem at home.
NHS mental health support teams are involved but are not having a positive impact - the patient is emotionally intelligent, very bright and is still able to manipulate the situation, and the therapy/support that has been offered to date is formulaic and ineffectual.
Are there any parental support/advisory resources out there that I can share with my friend?
Private rehab clinics are an immediate and available option - any support/suggestions there would be incredibly useful too.

Firstly the drink and drugs are his/her way of coping,it’s difficult to understand but that’s how it is.Do they have other addictive tendencies and do they self harm?
Rehab isn’t the answer because it’s not the problem,it can help but unless they are on board it’s a waste of time and money.
When push comes to shove a good therapist, not just a talking therapist but a proper psychotherapist in conjunction with a sympathetic psychiatrist who dishes out the proper medication in the appropriate dose is really the only way forward.
Having purpose has been proved to help immensely but unfortunately it goes against the whole root causes of depression.
I would also seek further investigation into his/her needs as there could be multiple things not just a blanket diagnosis of depression.
Edit.
There is a rehab clinic at Delamere in Cheshire which I looked at for my son but decided it wasn’t going to be that effective for him. It’s also bloody expensive.
