After a lifetime of nagging, five years ago I took my dentist's advice and started flossing my teeth.

My appointment this week: "You know flossing is pointless, do you? You should be using Tepes. I've never seen anyone be successful with floss."

I seem to recall there are some dentists on PH. If you're still about, what is your view?

I use Tepes on the molars where there’s bigger gap & floss on g the front ones. Since starting I do seem to need less dentistry & I don’t get bleeding from my gums any more.

On a similar bent, about seven years ago, my dentist commented that my teeth weren’t as clean as they usually were, the only thing that had changed was I had started using an electric toothbrush.

I reverted to manual and it got back to normal. I presumed I maybe brush harder than the average person.

I have tried an electric brush and also feel my teeth aren’t as clean. Came to the conclusion that a lifetime of manual brushing worked out well so reverted back.

My dentist finally shamed me into daily flossing a few years back. I went back to him, proudly telling him I was now flossing daily. He said "twice a day would be better".

No pleasing some people.

Often found flossing pointless, barely above better than nothing. What I do find useful is water flossing, a jet washer for the gaps is a lot more effective than pulling a bit of tape back and forth. Dentist agrees.

I don't like the metal cores in Tepe brushes so I use the Wisdom equivalent Wisdom

Flossing has surely got to be better than doing nothing.

It will remove tiny bits of food that your toothbrush missed,

Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth,
And spotted the dangers beneath
All the toffees I chewed,
And the sweet sticky food.
Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth.

I wish I’d been that much more willin’
When I had more tooth there than fillin’
To give up gobstoppers,
From respect to me choppers,
And to buy something else with me shillin’.

When I think of the lollies I licked
And the liquorice allsorts I picked,
Sherbet dabs, big and little,
All that hard peanut brittle,
My conscience gets horribly pricked.

My mother, she told me no end,
‘If you got a tooth, you got a friend.’
I was young then, and careless,
My toothbrush was hairless,
I never had much time to spend.

Oh I showed them the toothpaste all right,
I flashed it about late at night,
But up-and-down brushin’
And pokin’ and fussin’
Didn’t seem worth the time – I could bite!

If I’d known I was paving the way
To cavities, caps and decay,
The murder of fillin’s,
Injections and drillin’s,
I’d have thrown all me sherbet away.

So I lie in the old dentist’s chair,
And I gaze up his nose in despair,
And his drill it do whine
In these molars of mine.
‘Two amalgam,’ he’ll say, ‘for in there.’

How I laughed at my mother’s false teeth,
As they foamed in the waters beneath.
But now comes the reckonin’
It’s methey are beckonin’

Oh, I wish I’d looked after me teeth.

Yes my dentist shamed me about it as well. The usual don't drink fizzy juice as well (I generally dont) we got talking about food and he said he was having pizza tonight. I said oh remember and eat plenty of fruit and veg to balance that out. It didn't go down well...

IMO basic dental floss is useless. However, dental tape is much more effective, ideally used in conjunction with TePes.

The regular use of TePes over the course of a couple or three years made a big difference for me. No more bleeding gums when brushing. I would not have had the patience to use regular floss & I doubt it'd have worked as well - particularly with the rear teeth.

Should try an Oral B io 10, it's like taking your mouth to a car wash.

I swapped from tape to one of those water picks and my dentist reckons it’s great. Would love to hear from dentists on here tho!

I bought a cheap water pick before properly using TePes. The latter worked better for me, but what I do remember about water picks was the need to be very careful when using them, lest they spray the mirror / wall / ceiling / window. They're pretty useful for scaring off a crying cat at night too.

One thing to remember is that you don't have to brush ALL of your teeth. Just the ones you want to keep.

The cordless all-in-one (no separate reservoir) are a lot easier to control. The higher pressure settings can be a bit much for those with sensitive teeth and/or gums, but if used correctly and very regularly - like twice per day, they are extremely effective in preventing plaque build-up.

I have dental implants and this device is essential to me.
