Inguinal hernia open surgery pain
Discussion
Hi all
Anyone here had inguinal hernia surgery using open cut not keyhole. You read dr google and people are running round like olympic athletes after a fortnight. As for me my operation area and scar 16 days on is really sore, tender, very painful.
Funy enough after 2 days of hell forca few days it felt easier in bed to get to sleep. Now tossing and turning most of the night.Scar is healing well says the nurse. Someone said that after a week or so all the deadened nerves and tissues from the open start to wake up so it will feel worse. But as I say 16 days on and debilitating
Anyone else take weeks to heal, thanks

I had mine done this time last year,
it was open not keyhole, sore for a few days and then just got better really, I was told to walk at least a mile a day then I didn't have to wear those funny stockings.
Couldn't get on with the hernia belt/pants thing so binned it off after a while.

There are other threads in here on hernias. I've had two inguinal hernia ops over a span of 50 yrs! First one under Gen anaesthetic in 1968 (right side), second in 2019 under a local anaesthetic (left side).
Did you have it under a general anaesthetic or local?
I'd go with Local anaesthetic every time! I was on my way home after not more than a couple hours (inc waiting).
My bro-in-law had an inguinal hernia in the autumn of last year and 'paid' to have it under a General anaesthetic (almost £2k more than I paid in 2019 under a Local). He tells me he still has pain now although it is better than it was.
My contribution if you wish to read it to the last thread is below (click link).

How soon after the surgery were you expected to start walking a mile a day? I'm booked for one doing on 25 Jan and I love walking so the sooner I can get back to that the better.it was open not keyhole, sore for a few days and then just got better really, I was told to walk at least a mile a day then I didn't have to wear those funny stockings.

I had my umbilical hernia done via ope surgery
Tender for a few days but started exercise after a few days with long walks lifting light weights afer a week
It only felt I could fully push it with exercise after a month
The scar itself remained tender for a good 5/6 weeks
After 3 months its painless generally but get the odd twinge out of the blue

I am 4 months in so far after having open surgery. I felt awful for days to be honest and getting out of bed or turning in bed was so painful. I also felt pretty exhausted, but I did make sure my 10 days off I done nothing at all-though day 4 I went to work to get some stuff dispatched for a few customers, but went home to bed straight away. I done a lot of sleeping.
The wound site itself was fine and healed nicely but the real pain was the base and surrounding area of my genitals was so so so sore and painful-it also felt very numb. Excitable Moments so to speak were actually painful, which was worrying as the groin area is an area of a lot nerves and I was worried of nerve damage. It took a good 5 weeks for normality to come back in that area.
I did have to hold the surgery area if I sneezed or coughed.
Just take it easy, you will get better but everyone is different when it comes to healing.

it was when the anesthetic wore off I really felt it, the hospital sent me home with a load of meds and they did help.
I just bought a cheap step counter from Ebay and actually enjoyed getting out every day. I had six weeks off in the end and still took it easy once back at work as I have a physical job.
@ Mitch,
I think it comes down to what sort of work you do, if you work in an office you can get back sooner, if you lay patios it needs longer to stich back together.
Mine has been done just over a year now, I still get the odd twinge as a poster above said.
Oh and as a by the by even when I was under I felt the surgeon tugging away and tucking the patch in, all done and dusted in about 30 mins, I went private as I couldn't wait the nine months or so for the NHS.

Had mine done 10 years ago. Open surgery and off work for 2 weeks. Slowly built up to cycling 30 miles in one go after 6 weeks.
Before the op, eat plenty of roughage and cut your toe nails the night before!! If you feel you're going to cough or sneeze, have a cushion or pillow handy to compress the area.
Be prepared for bruising the size of a cushion!!

Had my laparoscopic hernia repair sergery this morning...
- 07:00 - Hospital appointment time.
- 09:00 - Admitted to theatre.
- 10:35 - Woke up.
- 15:25 - Picked up by the OH. Could have left at about 13:30 based on where things were at but the OH was on a Teams call. Fortunately I could have the room as long as I wanted.
- Literally no pain in the abdomen except when I move and then a slight soreness. Might get worse as the painkillers wear off.
- Intermittent pain in both shoulders. Apparently this is "referred pain" caused by gas that they inject into the abdomen to help them see what they need to.
- Felt a little spaced out. Still do. Nothing to stop me doing ordinary things but being careful.
Not a hernia but I did get my appendix out a few years ago.
I got emergancy surgery on the Thursady at 1am. I was back in college on Monday morning.
I just kept myself dosed up wiyh paracetemol and ibuprofen for the first few weeks and tgen used them as needed for another week or so.
I was back at work 2 weeks later (barman) .
The first few nights were sore and getting comfy wss hard. Taking paracetemol and ibuprofen just before bed took tge edge off enough to get to sleep.
I still got twinges from the scar for up to a year or so later.

My experience mirrored yours , really easy the actual day, followed by days of excruciating pain for the next two weeks - 07:00 - Hospital appointment time.
- 09:00 - Admitted to theatre.

Only kidding hope you recover well.
I was a bit sore the next few days but not as bad as I feared .

About 24 hours since I got home. Stomach feels like it's been used as a punch bag and the incisions are a little sore, but not bad at all really. Couldn't sleep at all last night. Basically lay there all night feeling awake. Wonder if that's a side effect of the anaesthetic.
Had mine done by keyhole a few years ago.Pretty much pain free after a few days.
A lot of pain in my shoulders just after the op from the gas. They didn't glue one of the incisions properly. It was a proper Friday afternoon job
Had open on the other side 10 or so years ago.
Much longer recovery/pain.
