I'm male early 50s and have been losing hair gradually for ~20 years, obviously it isn't growing to grow back. I'd always tried to tell myself it wasn't that bad and I still have some amount of hair. I didn't want to "acknowledge" it's gone, my hairdresser does the best she can with limited material available.

Today my better half took a jokey video of us to send to some friends. Seeing the video made me think st I'm actually semi-bald and I look silly pretending otherwise.

Is there a thought process anyone goes through to decide to give up on hair?

Try it. If you don't like it, what you have will grow back.

Thought process - only that I started thinning a bit on top then thought sod it, let's try a short cut. Last trip to the hairdressers I asked her to give me a number 3 all over... she said "I won't see you again...". She didn't. biggrin

Over a period of years I eventually went down to a razor cut. Life is easier without hair smile.

I started shaving with a 0 grade when I was 19 and then moved to an open blade mid 20s.

I had st hair and look better without it, now mid 40s.

Mid-20s.

It had been thinning for a while and got to the point that it looked a bit silly trying to style it into something - like I wasn't embracing the hair loss.

So, I figured I'd do a number 3 all over just before I went on a fortnight's holiday. That way, if I didn't like it, I'd have a semi-opportunity to grow it back a bit before facing people I knew.

As it happened, I was pleasantly surprised with

a) how much hair I actually had left
b) the fact it looked OK.

I hated going to the hairdresser anyway, so could now do it myself. Winning.

Never been to a hairdresser since. I'm now mid-40s and still have a bit up top, but just wet shave it once a week and keep a short beard.

Soon to be 49 here, about 4 years ago, over Christmas as I had 2 weeks off, I took it all back to a grade 2 (ish) all over, just to see, truth be told I wasn't there yet, however I am now thinking about it again, I am receding quite badly with an Ant McPartlin forehead, TBH my hairline is very similar to his in general and from photos taken from behind I can see definite pink head through my hair, what hair I do have is still pretty thick.

At the barber I have a grade 3, sides and back and a tight scissor cut on the top, just enough to get a bit of texture, not sure if I am there yet but I am getting close to just like, maybe a grade 1 all over, as opposed to a proper all over shave.

23, saw a photo of the back of my head and there was a 50p sized thin bit on the crown. I had short hair anyway, but as soon as it was noticeable ... Out came the bic that night, been bic'd ever since (20+yrs).

I have a full head of hair and probably always will, so whilst my luxurious locks preclude me from having experienced life as a baldy directly, I can definitely advise that anyone who is balding or has a receding hairline should definitely just shave it all off. Having the egghead look is one thing, but having a few thin strands of hair teased into some sort of sparse covering is even worse. Just let it go.

Just go shorter and shorter over time. Actually makes you look younger than having a bald patch. You’ve obviously still got the bald bit but it’s less noticeable with a grade 2 all over.

Once you have done it you will never look back, its so much easier.
Start with a No 2 all over and see how you feel, as said it will always grow back.
I bought a set of Wahl mains clippers about 2 years ago which are great.

I did it at 50, day one of a summer holiday. Less chance of work piss-takers, more chance to get some colour on my milk bottle white head. I have always had a, cough, 'high forehead' but it was getting a bit too high. Bought some cheap clippers, set to 1mm, away I went.

Be prepared to think you look like a furry tennis ball until you get used to it. Also remember no-one else gives a toss and if they did you shouldn't care anyway smile

I was going thin so start of lock down and since, I shave mine with clippers at 0. Love it. No faffing about.

A few people have stopped my thinking I was Jason Statham - this has been the only downside.

Late 20's I started on a number 3 and within 8-12 months was using bare clippers, still bare clippers now almost 30 years later and it is so much easier, last week I had to replace my bottle of shampoo that has taken almost 18months to use up biggrin

Clipper what’s left down to grade 2, if you’re happy with it, just keep dropping the clippers down half a grade, repeat.

20 years bald now, best haircut I’ve ever had, would never want my hair back.

I’ve had this at least 4 times. Mainly abroad.

Tour guide at Universal Studios was adamant I was him…..I said I wished I had his 6 pack and bank balance.

I had my hair done on #2 or #1 when I was a kid, then grew it long between 13-17, I then shaved it on #0 around 17 but then tried to grow it again when 18-19 and realised it was going very thin on top, since 19 been using a bic razor every other day. I'm 34 now and have a monk hairline.

did it when I turned 60, although been No2 since late 30's. Found shaving to be more laborious needing at most a 2 day interval, I hate shaving anyway so back to a No2 and face shaved every 3 days.

I took the plunge at the weekend - 2 on the back and sides and 6 on the top.

I'm kinda feeling I should have left it a little longer on top. It's so short it's really showing how thin my hair has become.

I was literally just commenting to Mrs J how my thinning crown line was displayed in front of me this morning when I stood in front of a video conferencing camera and had the back of my head displayed on the screen on the opposite wall!

It will grow back.... But my advice is don't go too short to start with.
