I think this might be a new low in the gym.
Discussion
In the gym last night, I have done everything on my routine where the machines are available, everything else is in use.
I ask the guy on the leg extension, who is quite clearly watching videos on his phone, how many sets he has left, in the hope is says 1 or 2 and puts the phone down and gets on with them.
He says 2, but immediately follows it up with I'll be 5 to 10 minutes!!! I said, more out of shock than anything else and without thinking "for two sets?!?!" and wandered off.
I got on to lat pull down and did 4 sets and 2 sets of tricep extensions and he was till on lug extension on his phone!
That's it, that's the thread.

I don't think that's a new low really. Worse is when three or four teenagers crowd round a machine, one of them does a few reps while the others watch, then he will get up and they will be stood there looking at their phones and chatting, then eventually another sits down and does a few reps, etc etc, and you just know you're not getting on that machine for at least another 20 minutes.
Getting a consistent rest period between sets is quite important if you're trying to progress, as is keeping track of everything you do, so it might look like someone is just wasting time and playing with their phone when actually they are doing things by the book.

Very similar to the exhibits of power lifters with their bag full of straps, chalk and nappies. They seem to take an hour to knock out 3 reps. I usually tell them to hurry up, or I jump in and do a set of 20 rep squats. Usually sorts the nappy wearers out.
Unfortunately, many people take the gym too and themselves too seriously. Nappy wearers are the most childish of all gym goers.

My gym is getting bad for this. I’m not even sure people are actually exercising, think it’s just the modern version of the pub for most.
Last night was really bad with groups of kids, left early to see a gym down the road to see about joining that one.

OP I feel the pain.
It doesn't seem to happen anywhere else tbh, my gym does have a kind notice that says maximum time of X on machines. I think gym workers need to do more with this sort of behaviour but never will.
Imagine paying for a Golf course membership and finding some snot with a pair of muddy Nike TN's and in Hugo Boss has just decided to use the hole in front with 10 balls.

Just ask if you can swap in between sets - it might shame these type of people into actually working out.
My quickest gym sessions are always when I swap in! I’m not as bad as OP’s guy, but definitely prone to taking an extra minute or two between sets without the pressure!I totally get the need for rest and people using their phones to log what they are doing. But this chump was nowtnear pushing himself to the limit to need up to 5 minutes rest and I could literally see Tik Tok, or some similar ste on his phone while asking him how many he had left.
I am not sure what has occurred at my gym, but in the last month, a routine I could do in ~55 mins, usually without having to wait for a machine by chopping the order around, now takes 1h 10 mins and I end up waiting for 3 or 4 machine.

That's real swell and all but sitting on the leg extension machine for 3-5 minutes while you "recover", in a gym where people want to use the equipment is pure ism.
Just ask to work in? I don’t really understand what the issue is.Gassing Station | Health Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
