Any fellow sufferers on Tamulosin?
Just been prescribed it and told it could be three months before I notice any effect. Is that right? How did you find it, any side effects of note?

I took it when I had a kidney stone. Don't seem to remember any notable side effects and I think it started to have an effect for that with a few days

Assume you mean Tamsulosin? I take one 400mcg per day to help with flow following prostate cancer treatment. No side effects whatsoever. Also, the benefits kicked in straight away. If I miss a day I feel things tighten up and flow reduce but everything's back to normal within a couple of hours of taking the tab the next day.

Dry orgasms are fairly common and some men suffer from erectile disfunction.
All the side effects are on the info sheet in the box

Re the 3 month action, you might be thinking about the other medication used for prostate (which is finasteride or dutasteride). Tamsulosin works pretty quickly tbh.

Main S/E IME - if people have low BP, can drop it even further (it's an alpha blocker and that family of meds is also used to treat high BP) so can feel dizzy/light headed. Otherwise some people do get some sexual dysfunction as mentioned above (but that's typically more common with finasteride).

Sorry, that is what I mean. Not started it yet and getting used to the name is obviously tricky.
Thanks for the info though.

Thanks for the reply. The three month comment was direct from the GP. I did think it sounded a bit lengthy. I do have 'normal' blood pressure, so hoping it won't drop it too much.

IME, works quickly. It will relax the smooth muscle in the prostate at the bladder neck and help improve flow.

The other medication (finasteride) works through hormone blocking and shrinks the prostate over a period of time - hence why that takes a lot longer to improve symptoms.

There’s also Alfuzosin.

I’m on 400mg daily after a urine infection caused by an enlarged prostrate in 2021 (the urine infection was the most painful thing I’ve ever had wrong with me- I thought my number was up).

I think I pee a bit less and less urgently, but switching to decaffinated coffee seems to have had more benefit. The ejaculation changes take a bit of getting used to!

The main issue was that my resting heart rate fell and I can get very dizzy when standing up. It can go as low as 36 (I run and cycle a bit) but the consultant seemed happy enough after an ECG when exercising.

I was on Tamsulosin and Finestaride for prostate issues and they didn't work. Absolutely hopeless. For 5 years I was on them with my GP telling me just to be patient and avoid surgery at all costs. Ended up having a TURP (when my GP retired and the new young GP disagreed with the old GP), which has been brilliant. Best thing I ever did. My surgeon told me post op that because of the particular way my prostate had enlarged, drugs were never going to have any effect.

Cross fingers it works for me. My issue is getting up in the night 3, 4 or 5 times. The GP seems to think it may help. I really don't want to have any surgery, I have had enough over the past few years and being on warfarin make surgery more complicated.

Same with me, I was on those two drugs for BPH, I then had the "Rezum" surgical procedure. I was lucky to have it done at my local NHS as its not available at every hospital. My GP then put me on Mirabegron.
