My 17 year old boy has a high metabolism and burning through calories like there's no tomorrow when training, to which, he is very, very lean.
At a guess 10% and lower body fat.

Although he tries to eat all the time to the point where he's bored of eating or feels sick, he just cannot put on any weight.

Would a mass whey protein, like PHD Advance Mass help with balancing out what he's burning to what he's eating?
Is this a reasonably healthy way of obtaining calories that can then be used to burn for his training?

Mass gainers can often just be a whey protein with lots of added added sugar.

A whey protein with ultra fine oats, plus some creatine would be my preference, if I were 10% BF biglaugh

300g serving size, but there is 6.3g of sugar per serving. Is that reasonable?
50g of protein and over 1100 calories. Oh, i can see it has 5g of creatine and oats too!

I've only chosen the PHD brand, as i had success with their SYNERGY product, many years ago.
I only tend to use their diet whey now, but i like their taste.

If there is a better product, please let me know.

I'm kind of against whey powders, not specifically for lactose reasons -

Far as I know for similar sort of costs and MAYBE more filling would be egg powders - or however he prefers eggs.

It still boils down to calories in vs calories out. So he'll have to increase the calories.

Plenty of ways (wheys and weighs) to increase cals rather than using an expensive 'mass' powder.

Oils (As this is PH, think Olive rather than Castrol GTX though) and nut butters I'd be looking at, add them to a bog standard whey shake. Low density, high calorie.

Ah, I used to be exactly the same, how he is going to look back fondly at this time when he is in his 40s.........

The question the op was looking to answer is about a teenager who is super lean, I think it is a matter of his body burning more calories than he is consuming rather than trying to body build bulk.

Caddyshack is spot on.
Although we are not going down to the levels of macros, he is burning far more calories than what he can currently take in.
So super lean and not growing for his age. I really don't think that his body can keep up unless we can more "clean" calories into him.

At this stage, if he is training as often as you say, then surely the national governing body can give you access to nutritionists or dietitians who can best guide you through this?

FWIW I trained at similar levels of intensity around the age of 16 and was measured at around 6% when weighing 83kg at 187cm in height. Used to have three bowls of cornflakes a day on top of normal meals but as I always had to make weight for comps so ultimately it was never a major concern. Turned out fine.

2 pints of whole milk a day and as much natural peanut butter as he can handle.

Apologies, wasn't paying as much attention as I should have been doing when reading the OP.

Have you checked for any food intolerances?

No. Best is to follow established protein amounts per kg bodyweight. Make the rest of his calories up with a proper balanced diet. If you want him to put on weight see if he wants to start weightlifting, muscle is far healthier to carry than fat.

I watched a series of “Alone” where contestants had to survive out in the wild. One of them had bulked up over 3atone before going on the show, he found the cheapest and most effective route was to drink pints of olive oil….

I can see the calories in the above if you want a dirty bulk just to make sure you are not in calorie deficit but I bet it keeps you pretty regular. I would be scared to fart, I think!

Went through this myself as a young 20 year old.

4 scoops of this https://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/100-ins...
&
2 scoops of this https://www.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/impact-...

with full fat milk. looking at an easy 800 cals plus.

I used to take two of these a day plus my normal meals. I combined it with a 5x5 strength routine, I gained a stone in 6 weeks and my strength blasted through a previous plateu.
