I have just started a programme to loose weight and build strength / physique.

As part of this I am looking to increase protein intake (mostly food, but will also want powder to supplement and also to have post work out).

Google has a large number of places to buy this, and variety of prices.

I would also like to get some other things (creatine, gut flora, vitamin D and magnesium)

Where is best, what recommendations do you have and does price get you ‘better’?!

Price probably won't get you 'better'. It's the same thing as deciding whether to buy Nurofen for £2.20 or Tesco Ibuprofen for 42p. Both are exactly the same thing.

However, how to know that your Vit D capsules are actually Vit D and not flour, that's the challenge. Amazon is probably full of dodgy cheap products.

Supermarket own brand stuff won't be too bad.

Personally I get some supplements from British Supplements. Google them. I also get some stuff from Tesco.

None of my supplements are weight loss orientated. For weight loss I cut out carbs and it worked.

as above, check the ingredients and youll find most of the time you are just paying for brand name.

you could try bulk powders - my protein

in regards to cutting out carbs = weight loss. it would only equal weight loss if your total calories were less than the body needs to maintain its weight.

also when cutting out carbs you lose weight fast as every gram of carbs you eat you hold 3g of water. cut out carbs for a few days and you will lose lots of water weight. eat them again and watch the weight creep back on (just water )

there are 3500 calories in a lb of fat - burn that off your maintenance (2500 ish average per day for a man) and you'll lose a lb of fat (a bit more for a few weeks as you will be eating less and probably less carbs

it doesn't matter what you eat its total calories - please do not believe any stupid youtube or tiktok fad diet selling you crap, the body does not work that way

if you don't believe me, try eating 5000 calories per day for a week in just fruit veg and meat and see how much weight you've gained. in reverse eat 1500 calories of chocolate crisps and cake for a week and see what happens.

also remember to count everything that goes into your mouth. sugar - sauces (mayo has like 700 calories per 100g)

sorry to hijack thread

Whey protein is whey protein whether you buy really expensive brand name or cheap as chips non brand stuff. The nutritional information is what counts.

Personally I think Amazon home brand is quite good value and up there in terms of total G's protein vs total calories contained per serving. I belive its just called Bulk and in plain grey packaging.

I would also recommend peak supps for things like creatine. Packaged in the UK and very reasonable cost wise. Available on amazon and the Web.

I have used British Suppliments in the past but the 3 week delivery and borderline batst crazy conspiracist spam emails from the company owner has put me off them.

Cut calories to lose weight. Anything else (intermittent fasting etc) is just a vehicle for a reduced calorie intake. Don't get caught up in any sort of lemon cleanse ste. Keto and cutting carbs can work for a short term result but as with most crazy diets, it's unsustainable long term for most.

Re protein, total daily intake (and quality of protein) probably most important vs timing (anabolic window etc). Good videos here and here.

For creatine, I buy creatine tablets from MyProtein via Amazon. I'm not motivated enough to mess around with powders/shakers in the morning. I take 5g daily.

Re gut flora, it's important to focus pre-biotics, not just pro-biotics. So fermented foods and plenty of fibre to nourish and sustain a good healthy gut microbiome. See work of Prof Tim Spector and Dr Justin Sonnenburg in this regard.

Thanks guys, appreciate the places to find vitamins and supplements. Will research the links and ideas provided.

Thank you also to those with links and advice, helpful too.

To be clear I am not looking on any fad's or chemicals to try and loose weight, this is being done via calorie counting, macro matching and hard work...

To go into more details, I wanted to get Protein at a decent price point and not pumped with carbs. I wanted creatine for pushing the power/weight up in training. Magnesium for muscle and sleep and a few others

I’m finding my protein to be unaffordable. It’s £90 for 2.5kg bag.

I think I am going to go into Holland & Barrett and see what I can find and check the quality. Anyone use them?

The protein works, offers a good balance of price and quality.

I've just started. I buy multivitamins from the supermarket (£4 for 90) and protein isolate from myprotein for £33/kg in the current sale applied at discount (I might not buy the isolate next time as it's less fat, but in hindsight I'm not trying to lose weight so feels pointless and that's only £24/kg in current sale). I've found the chocolate flavour is absolutely fine to consume.

I have a myprotein code here if you do want it as we both get £10 off and free delivery? Apologies if referrals aren't allowed!

I currently mainly buy from CN Sport who are a small business in Hereford but have a good website and generally stock high quality products, I recently paid about £41 for 2.1kg of Whey Protein (All the Whey up brand).

If you want Creatine look for Creatine Monohydrate, take 5grams per day, i favour powders as opposed to capsules and throw it in with the Protein powder, there's lots of brands but all Creatine Monohydrate is broadly similar.

My Protein is ok but they are shocking at fluctuating their prices then putting out "big sales" or "big discount codes" so I avoid them in the main.

Most of the protein powders in Home Bargains are pretty poor quality, lower protein than most supplement shops and filled out with other rubbish to compensate, they stick big brands onto it such as Mars and Snickers to sell it.

Might be relevant, might not, but H&B are going through a packaging rebrand at the moment, so many stores are selling "old" packaging stuff for peanuts, and often on a BOGOF.

Not proteins etc, but I recently bought about £250 worth of various health foods (8 of their big carrier bags full) for less than £40.

What training are you doing? Do you really need supplements?

Exactly. Unless you're on some monster training schedule (99% aren't) , competing athletically, i wouldn't bother.

Anyway, i would much rather just have a 200g chicken breast, than some powdered, additive laden mix.
