So had a dumb moment the other day while aligning a brake caliper on my MTB, and managed to put my finger into the disk while it was spinning. yikes

Firstly it fking hurt, the disk cut right through the nail and into the nail bed! lucky it didn't act as a guillotine and slice it right off!

This was just after it happened (and yes i know the nail needed cutting!):

and now looks like:

It still hurts a lot, especially braking on the MTB, and whenever i knock it.

Since there is little holding the nail together should i try supergluing it to strengthen it? is it ok to get superglue in the wound below the nail?

Or do i just let it fall off? im not going to yank it off purposefully, but don't think it would take much of a "catch" to rip it off.

Anyone and idea's?

Cheers

Last time I did similar I bought a set of false nails from poundland and glued one over the top of the bad nail, mainly to stop it from catching on clothing and it also acted like a splint for the nail and saved a lot of pain from knocks and everyday use.
Had to keep redoing it every so often but was worth doing.

It was a rather fetching ivory with pearlescent lustre actually.
I'm classy.

If I may suggest, Araldite is the way to go. Coat back of torn nail with adhesive and then put a strip of Sellotape over the repair. Not too tight. The Sellotape will keep the repair relatively flat and stop other stuff sticking to it while it hardens, and then peel off easily. Once the Araldite is fully cured you can use a nail file to trim it to a sensible appearance.

Ask me how I know....

Having the nail bed exposed is very painful (damhik), anything is better so yes trying gluing it up.

That was exactly what I was thinking. It would stabilise the broken bit and cover the wound.

It's a broken nail, what is a doctor going to do?

I lost an entire nail. The practice nurse at my GP cleaned & dressed the wound to prevent infection, made sure the nail would regrow (no idea what that involved as I could bear to watch) & gave me a very welcome pain killing injection.

I can see why it a very effective torture technique, I certainly wouldn’t want two or more missing.

Glue it with superglue.

OP, I did exactly the same in June.

Just tape it down or use plasters, because it'll catch on everything again and again, even if you're careful.

My nail kept growing OK, so I trimmed it short, and now you cannot see which finger I injured.

I would lay up a bit of fibreglass on that then shape it with a nail file

Ok, so i couldn't find any superglue, but did find some JB Weld, So have given this a go!

I forgot how long this stuff takes to go off, so will gave to keep my hand still now for a good hour or 2! But should be nice and strong? Even if it is grey!

It hasn't stung yet which is good, was worried about what would happen when it touches the flesh.

go to a nail salon, talk to them... they may be able to dress it clean it and then put a false nail on it....

trouble is everything will snag it. I did this with a nut wrench and an alloy wheel. and it hurt.

and even when cleaned and all it caught on everything, woke me up in pain and all sorts.. a day after false nail... no pain. and it took a while to grow out.
