So... I've had facial hair for years but only for the last few had a long beard.
I've not been on holiday since before COVID so not had to consider this... Hot country, plenty of sun... Carry on the with beard oil or apply sun cream ? Trying to think what's best to a) avoid sun burn b) keep my beard in the best condition

Would appreciate some advice here please

Hey mate, I always recommend a nice clean look. I think your pores would appreciate some fresh air and blessed sun rays. Let us know if you have a beard tan line after you shave. A holiday would be the perfect time to even it out.

BTW, I don't know why being clean shaven is so unpopular these days, but this is a separate topic.

Total laziness would be my guess.

I'm pretty sure that Gilette did some research that, ahem, "proved" that it takes more time to maintain a beard than to shave. Obviously, may not be completely impartial.

I put suncream where there is exposed skin (forehead, nose, cheekbones etc); your beard will stop your lower face from sunburn if it’s dense enough. Mine does.

Obviously prolonged sun will bleach / lighten your hair and beard so you can use a hair UV filter if it’s of concern. My wife is the cosmetics guru and has all these things covered. I use AVEDA Sun Care Protective Hair Veil apparently (just looked at the bottle). Woah, just looked it up and saw the price, it’s definitely not cheap but it works.

Yes, I'm not talking Castrol gtx here, I'm talking specific beard oil, it keeps my beard soft, prevents itching and helps the skin too

It also smells pretty good

Shaving every single day is quite a burdensome task.

I wouldn't say its laziness, just fashion.

The big increase in beards is mainly due to hipster tts who quite obviously spend inordinate amounts of time and energy preening and perfecting their immaculately coiffed hair styles and oh so 'individual' outfits.

I have no view on beards and the sun particularly... however, beards and love, yes!
I've had a beard most of my adult life - there has been the odd occasion when I've shaved it off, but not many, and never really been 'long'. Of course it's been subjected to sun over the years from holidaying in Cyprus to Turkey to Spain and god knows where else I've been, not forgetting back here at home - without going too much off topic, especially during the summer of 76 which, contrary to being told it was 'hotter' last year (yeah, for one day), back in 76 we didn't just have the hot sun, we had no rain, not a drop, that's none, for 3 months!).

Obviously, beard's a bit grey now, but hey ho, so's the hair (what's left of it).

I just love the fact that 53 yrs ago one of my mates 'told' me to 'shave your beard off', it's a long story, but it was in our local haunt where lots of guys had been eyeing up this 'new girl on the block' so to speak, including me. She was way out of my league and probably many of the guys in there felt the same.

For some unknown reason I did as my mate suggested, and I still recall the feeling as I walked into our local haunt, group playing music out the back, place packed to the hilt, yet I felt everybody was staring at me...
'I felt (as I said at the time) like a fking plucked chicken!'
I came so very close to walking out and going back home, but my pals convinced me to stay.

That mate became a mate for life. Why?
Although I stayed I was bored stiff, again all on my tod (my steady girlfriend was away - long story), because all my mates were all with their girlfriends. The pal who'd told me to 'shave it off' reminds me at one point that 'It's your round Dan.'
I get them in, go back to our table with the drinks on a tray but not enough room for mine. I return to the bar hand the tray back and grab my pint (this was a time when you could leave drinks unattended without the slightest worry). I take a quick sup. Then feel 'hot' breath' on my neck... turn around to be greeted by this very seductive voice (it's her!) asking: 'Where's your beard gone?' To which I replied the first 3 words that came into my head: 'It fell off.'

Hit it off like a house on fire! cloud9 Married and still together today.

Yes I do nearly every day. Helps keep it soft and easier to maintain.

My beard can look a bit on the "wild" side but it's still maintained daily / every other day. This includes shaving areas high up on my face and on the neck and then doing a quick scissor trim of moustache. It takes less than 5mins. Every couple of months I'll give it a big trim - like a hair cut.

That wasn't what he asked. Your post is irrelevant.

As obvious as it sounds, If you do any form of shaved areas , re-shaping /lining from time to time make sure you do it before the sun.

I tend to go to barber & get lines straightened out before a trip to sun.

Bear in mind things like snorkelling might be trickier with facial hair & getting a good seal…

I’m really lazy and have a beard.

If it upsets some people that I make choices they don’t like then I’m happy.

I grew a beard over Covid - having previously shaved, for years, with an old fashioned DE razor, brush, hard soap etc.

I trim mine every 2 or 3 days, very easy, takes a minute - much quicker than shaving every day.

In terms of the sun, I've just come back from somewhere hot and didn't put any creams or lotions on.

There's a reason why most Aussie outback farmers have bushy beards - and a hat. Been medical advice in Australia for a long time to avoid skin cancer for outdoor workers. Sure, you could carry round sunblock and re-apply all day, but a sunhat & beard is more convenient
