Help, is this an A n'E job or do I just stick disinfectant on it and keep it clean?

Nearly came off playing football barefoot, had to remove it with pliers after a very large red wine last night...

Grim!

I’ve had that done twice by professionals. A very similar method to you, grab it with pliers and pull, not without 2 injections to the bone to numb it all, rather the wine!

Anyway… I’m sure they cleaned it up with something, maybe vodka for you? Then I had inadine patches (they are a sort of breathable non-stick pad), then bandaged & cotton wool pad up, then a finger/toe bandage to hold it all on ( they come in different sizes) https://www.boots.com/boots-finger-bandage-and-app...

Bag over foot with waterproof tape to stop it getting wet in the shower for 2 weeks and it healed.

I've done this lots.

Plenty of clean water, then all the products that your pharmacist suggests over the counter. Plasters and some creams.

Unwrap and check it twice week and aim to get it dry and crusting as soon as possible/ natural.

If it gets infected ---- orthopaedics in a hospital the same day.

AIUI as long as you keep it clean, and don’t get it infected you’ll be ok and the nail will grow back. You’ll need a dressing to keep it clean but you’ll also want some air on it to help it scab and heal.

It’ll probably hurt like a bd for the next few days so have painkillers handy. Look out for any swelling, angry looking redness, yellowy muck - any of that and you want to get to A&E double time. Keep it at hip level if you can to aid circulation.

From what I remember of infected ingrowing toenails half a lifetime ago, the nail will regrow unless the nail bed - the area at the very base of the nail - dies. One treatment for ingrowers is to narrow the nail by cauterising a small area on the offending side of the nailbed. Managed to dodge that bullet, thank fk…

Good luck.

As others have said - infection, keep a close eye. Don't muck about. Sensible to not go outdoors barefoot, or in the sea, or public baths, until it's healed to pink skin.

You'll find it's a biggish component on your balance and stability.

It'll take a year, give or take, to grow back fully.

Try to get hold of something called MediHoney. Anti bacterial gel / paste type thing which promotes healing and acts as a barrier to infection

Mrs Loto is a podiatrist and used to do nail removals by using a pallet knife inserted and pushed under the nail bed - makes me wince just thinking about it. Thankfully she did a local first.

I did that years ago and it was painful but I had trainers on.
My nail never grew back properly and has had fungal growth under it ever since, has never bothered me but may be worth taking some medical advice on it.

Sure it's fungal? I had the same, nail grew back perfectly first time then it was damaged and fell off twice more. Grew back slowly and turned into an old person's nail - had it checked by GP, lab tests and dermatologist. No fungal infection present but it looks like it. I use Tipp-Ex when it's on show.

Mine is the same yellow and horrible now but has what I’m assuming is fungal deposits under it.
Lovely subject! vomit
