Long story short was in agony from last Monday. Went to GP Wednesday she sent me to A&E, few hours later told it’s Colitis.
I’ve got nice pain killers and antibiotics which thankfully is keeping the pain under control now.
Last night decided to cook carbonara as my appetite was back at last. Bad idea, straight back to agony and trips to the loo.
Back to ok today as meds are doing their thing.
My question is what CAN I eat that’s not just plain pasta or rice etc?
It’s a sunny weekend, I can’t really go anywhere (also had ACL surgery two weeks ago) so the only thing I was looking forward to was nice food!

You have my sympathy (I have IBS, so in essence ‘somethings up, but we don’t know what’).

Try having a look here: https://crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/

Is this entirely new to you? If so, this seems quite odd as I would expect it to be more gradual, although ‘flare ups’ are a thing.

Has anyone proposed put in place a follow up. I’d be wanting to see a consultant gastroenterologist as a next step.

Haven’t looked to see where you are, but one of the leading ones in London is Jeremy Sanderson. Lots of others obviously.

There’s lots of stuff about elimination diets too, to identify what you can eat.

Yep, totally new and out of the blue.
They are going to call me to book in a follow up “camera” appointment so I guess they’ll be going in for a proper look?
Other than that I’ve got another 4/5 days of the antibiotics and not much else?

Maybe I need to take this a bit more seriously than just an infection that’s going to clear up?

Hi UTH. I would take it seriously but (easy for me to say) don’t panic.

I assume they’ve ordered a colonoscopy so they will be able to have a good look around to see what’s what. Likely that will rule out some stuff and you’ll be able to work things out from there.

Best wishes. Austin.

After last night’s experience of what some rich food did to me, I’m certainly taking the eating seriously. Not much else I can do from there I guess? Although I did imagine after the course of antibiotics all should be cleared up and back to normal? But maybe I’m wrong?

Watcha, wouldn't worry too much about your dinner plans and take it easy....
Had this for years, it's a very grey area of teminology as far as I'm concerned, diverticulitis, ibs, coeliac etc...
Flare ups are bloody awful, mine are normally down to stress but I know that there are various foods that I like but don't like me..
Big no no's are bread, rice and pasta along with spicy stuff, gluten free pasta still messes with me..
Still haven't learnt my lesson as there's a x4 pack of cider and a pizza in the fridge for the football this afternoon!

Yes my partner does, funny enough also came to light after a cabanora!

It’s a long road to figure out what your trigger foods are that cause a flair, we have basically narrowed down to refined sugar like chocolate and wheat.

In a flare it’s plain food only really, rice, chicken, salmon, eggs, as little oil as possible. Maybe cornflakes and lactose free milk. Mash with maybe some lactose free soft cheese

No veg, nothing with skins.

Basically a baby’s diet

It’s a life long condition with no cure, and every single person it’s flared up by different foods. Some people can handle chocolate others can’t. There’s lots of very good infusion based drugs now, and you’ll get steroids to help a flare but they have their own side effects (weight gain, effect bone density etc)

You’ll most likely be told to do a elemination diet or Fodmap to find out what your triggers are.

Well this is all rather sobering. Genuinely thought this would be done and forgotten by the end of the pills.

It might be nothing to be fair...doctors have never been able to ascertain what to call my actual issue.
I would suggest getting a food intolerance test done and cut out whatever it suggests might be an issue for starters....

Everything so far seems questionable.

A diagnosis of Colitis after a few hours in A&E and a prescription of antibiotics rather than steroids? If they were certain on Colitis you’d have been prescribed 30/40mg prednisone as a starting point.

With no symptoms other than being ‘in agony’ there’s not a lot to go on. Colitis is normally diagnosed after weeks/months of being dismissed and you’re at the point of significant weight loss from countless weeks of stting water/blood.

My moneys on some sort of bug/intolerance, and a bland few days diet would be beneficial. If it’s Colitis it’s for life, with varying levels of symptoms. Colitis doesn’t have a one size fits all approach to diet either, contrary to above, white bread/pasta/spicy food was always good for me!

Hope things sort themselves out, you’re a long way from a formal diagnosis!

Well, not just agony, probably 50 visits to the loo in 3 days as well.
It was a few hours in the hospital including a CT scan. Doc said it’s likely mine is viral colitis, as there can be lots of different things that cause it? So hopefully antibiotics kick the virus and back to normal? Would that be the logic there?

Yeah blood pressure’s been taken many times in the last 5 or 6 days, nothing alarming flagged.
Nothing particularly said about alcohol except the usual warning on the packet that seems to be on everything anyway and the pharmacist saying it when handing them over. I’ve not drunk since last weekend, although this sunny weekend was tempting me for a rosé….any reason these are any worse than everything else that says don’t drink?

I’m not really too bothered about drinking either way so happy to skip it, but have you had personal experience of it being a seriously bad idea?

I only ask as it feels like these sorts of things come up when googling for so many different meds + alcohol but personal and friend’s experience has often been “I was 100% fine” so I do wonder if they ACTUALLY serious ones get lost in a bit of “boy who cried wolf” with meds+booze if you see what I mean?

I've lived with Ulcerative Colitis for 38 yrs, came to light in my teens, then I've had flare ups since. I had a major one in 2002 which was very nearly the end of me, the rest have been quite minor.

Tbh, I pretty much eat what I want these days, I'm probably due a flare up as I haven't had one in quite a long time. But, it can be lived with and don't panic too much.
