I’m being troubled by pain in one of my lower molars (think its a baby one which i’ve still got) when eating or drinking hot/cold stuff. Pain lasts for a few seconds and radiates a little bit into jaw and neck. Started out of nowhere on the weekend. Teeth and gums are in good shape no history of cavities or fillings.

Happened to have a dental check up yesterday anyway; x-rays looked good and annoyingly there was no pain when he used cold spray. Painful again today though. Could be due to grinding and clenching at night but jaw doesn’t ache (ive had tmj episodes in the past). Bit stumped at the moment, might try taking ibuprofen for a few days.

1. My dentist told me the best toothpaste for sensitive teeth is Sensodyne Repair and Protect. It works well for me. You could try smearing it on the tooth for a few days.

2. Sometimes my teeth hurt if they are pushing up against one another (my mouth is quite crowded). I'll prise them apart to relieve the pressure.

3. I once had pain from a hairline crack that didn't show up on x-ray. Went back to the dentist and he had a closer look with some kind of magnifying glass.

Try various brands of 'sensitive' toothpaste. They have a variety of active ingredients and I found cheap £1 a tube Tesco sensitive or the Sainsbury's equivalent to be better by far than Sensodyne. In fact the Sensodyne made the pain worse, both temperature sensitivity and pressure sensitivity. Maybe just me, but it's worth a try.

Thanks i’ll give sensodyne a try. The pain is really quite intense but subsides after a couple of seconds. But it doesn’t always occur which I find odd.

Had a follow up today - the baby molar tooth has a dark spot on it and is apparently in the process of dying (just great!) and may fall out on its own. No pain or sensitivity though. Was advised to leave it be for now and to return if it started giving me problems again at which point it will have to be removed. I suppose I should have asked there and then but is this standard for a dying/dead baby tooth? If it's not giving me issues can it just remain in my mouth?
