Any abdominal experts around?

I thought i was developing appendicitis yesterday & went to A&E on the advice of 111. I have a dull ache on the right side, just below the far side of my right side rib cage. On a 1-10 scale it's a 1 until I cough or sneeze when it turns into a 8-9, like being stabbed! it's highly localised to the spot described.

I also have cold like symptoms, achy, runny nose & irritatingly, a cough. A covid test was negative. After all the tests, I was sent home & told to come back if it worsens, or I pee blood etc.

There's no history of gall bladder or pancrea problems, allergies, not overweight etc. 52 & active exerciser if that matters. Any ideas? Could it be a torn muscle there? It's a painful little sod.

Very, very similar to the symptoms I have at the moment and I am off tomorrow for an ultrasound for a hernia.

Have a grope for a small lump where you have the pain but I would go to your gp as soon as you can.

No, not that. The cough & pain came on simultaneously & gradually. I had bloods, urine, a CT & ultrasound at hospital, it all came back normal. I'm a medical curiosity.

After all that, I’m sure a forum will get to the bottom of it!

Could be diverticulitis? I had it and antibiotics on a drip cleared it after a few days.

Extremely painful and had the flu like symptoms..

Probably would have been seen on the CT scan unless it is very mild

True! Hadn’t picked that up. Too early!

I suffered with mine for a weekend because I hoped it would go away and boy was it sore.

Similar to my gaul bladder issues. I had no problems, then one bout of pain, which was the stones apparently in the neck of the bladder causing agitation. A course of antibiotics got rid of all symptoms immediately and I was put on the list for gaul bladder removal.
11 months later, a bout of severe pain, when the Gaul bladder burst and they had to whip it out.

Got the date wrong for my scan, it’s next month. frownfrownfrown

Seriously, how do I get a memory test? Think I’m going senile.

Have you ever had a kidney stone? I was convinced I had appendicitis and eas sweating and could hardly breathe, never had pain and discomfort / feeling of bloatedness like it, went to docs who saw me v quick and she asked if I had ever had a kidney stone….turns out I did, it had moved out of kidney and was colicing the tube to bladder…..after about 8 hours is passed into the bladder and was so much better!
Scan showed I had several and I ended up having surgery to remove them.
I’ve had another since on other kidney, it was bad but not as bad.
Extraordinary pain and discomfort though.

Could be gall bladder issue, (I say could be).

Similar symptoms, I had mine out three years ago, simple short keyhole operation, not had any problems since.

This would explain the symptoms. I had excruciating pains on my left side. The pains exacerbate so it feels like it's coming from elsewhere e.g. abdomen. A CT scan and ultrasound revealed nothing.

The consultant said it is most likely due to small shards of stone which have already broken up which are not picked up from the scans because they are too small. They make their way down the ureter like a sharp pin scraping along the wall hence the pain. No surgery required, just need to endure the pain and let it pass through.

The blood in the urine is due to the cutting from the shards. The flu like symptoms might not be related or it could be a mild infection from the small cuts.

The irony is that they found a 8mm stone on my right hand kidney from all the scans but there was no pain. Unfortunately at the time, it was buried within the flesh of the kidney and could not be removed so just had to monitor.

This tends to be genetic so check whether any other family members had kidney stones in the past. Drink water regularly throughout the day to help.

The pain is way above the kidneys & only an issue if I cough or sneeze.

Sounds remarkably like costochondritis.
