I had a ceramic onlay (sort of cap of half a tooth) fitted to a molar, and it 'pinged' off completely intact whilst flossing after approx 3 months. Private dentist, cost approx £700.

I took it back to the same dental practice under an emergency appointment & it was reapplied, & has been fine since.
I wasn't really given a good explanation as to why it came off - they basically said it shouldn't have, but could have been todo with lots of gum bleeding or saliva affecting the cement? Which I don't understand really as I thought UV cure adhesives were instant setting.

I'm asking for a refund for the emergency appointment fee to reattach it. Just want to double check - is this a common thing & a reasonable request?

Not a dentist but I to have had problems with onlays, the first one was a ceramic one that fell off while eating , managed to salvage it and took it back to the same practice but different dentist who said the ceramic one was not suitable and should never have been fitted so recommended a metal one and it would be best if it was gold. No refund for the failed one and additional cost for the gold one, this one vanished during a meal presumed to be swallowed.
Returned to the same practice to see yet another dentist who said an onlay was unsuitable and I should have it crowned which is what I asked for in the first place. Again no refund for a poor job paid for two onlays and ended up paying for a crown.
So in my experience onlays are hopeless and will not stay in.

I’ve just had one of these, was £200 and my dentist said if it didn’t work I’d get the £200 off a crown so nothing to lose.

I have two onlays, both for about 10 years, one came off chewing toffee, stuck back on by regular dentist, no charge, other than that no problems.

I no longer eat toffee
