Met up with some friends today. Husbands mother is in her 90s and lives in her own home with a live in carer. Fees £1300 a week!

If she moves into a home it will be £1800 a week.

I had no idea that fees were this high.

Area is South Devon.

Apparently at this rate her savings will be exhausted in about a year's time.

Are fees just as high in other parts of the Country?

Live in carer is 1300 a WEEK? Is that right?

Can you not hire someone yourself. That is a crazy amount. Or look at two visits a day from a care company?

24hr nursing care runs to around 5k a month round here, it’s horrendous.

Has she been assessed for NHS CHC? If not then get it done asap.

Yes, it's a lot of money, but look how many man-hours of work are required to provide 24hr care for a week. The hourly salaries are low. Care companies struggle to make a profit and struggle to hire staff. It's the same story with childcare. These are inherently really labour-intensive activities, therefore they are expensive. Previous generations would never have considered paying other people to do this work. As families we looked after our own kids and our own elderly in our homes.

Yep sounds right. Most folk don’t last long in them though so there’s always that element to it. Average stay isn’t as long as you’d imagine - sub 2 years I think I read.

We had a relative in an extremely nice one in Oxfordshire - it was a shambles - like a total loony bin with staff basically just ignoring people because it’s too hard (dementia wing). We had help at home before that and went through about 12 carers and they were awful too. Died after 8 months, best outcome really. Another relative of mine in a cheaper one in Poole, has had multiple falls, broken bones, currently in hospital and I doubt she'll ever leave tbh. That one is less nice than the other we used but still 1500 a week.

Care homes are big business, some with very big profits. While 24 hr care and medical attention can be costly, in my mother's latest home while she recovered from a fall the (skeleton) staff basically sat around drinking tea most of the night. I know as i had frequent phone calls with a very helpful and pleasant senior staff member. I'm sure homes vary widely however. Staff are often foreign and on minimum wage. Food is 'pretend' gourmet, but in reality it is repetitive and not particularly nourishing and managers are often under qualified (in my book anyway I'd like some academic quals as well as being able to generate money for the shareholders).

Not all bad though, I've found the majority of basic pay care home staff to be incredibly caring, kind and tolerant.

Last home my mum 'visited' was £5800 pm., which I think is fairly middle of the road price-wise.

My wife’s sister has been in a care home for years, she sold her home to pay the fees.
When the money ran out an arrangement was made ( don’t know the details ) with the local authority and social services to pay most of the fees. Her sister pays the rest out of her income, leaving her enough to get by. You don’t need much, everything is in the fees.
By the way, the place is excellent, lovely staff, great facilities, she is very happy there.

How do people pay this?....

My girlfriend is a Senior Care Assistant at a home with a specialist dementia wing.
She earns less than £20k a year for the privilege.

Where is all of this money going? Christ.

Is it? 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for £68k per year? It's at least 2 carers needed to cover the hours. I wouldn't do it for £68k, let alone £34k. My dad's mum went into a home a year ago, her savings are currently paying for it and it's somewhere in that ballpark.

I briefly looked at 24 home care for my dad in early December

As he needed a 2 person lift I would need a 6 people rota to cover 24 hour periods

Costs were eyewatering at best part of 20k a month

In the end it was not necessary as he ended up in and out of hospital/care home on assessment beds and then unfortunately passed away early Jan

She'll be due a pay rise next month then as minimum wage breaches £20k.

Live in carer fees sound about right as Mrs Grandmother has one in Cornwall.

Guy across the road helps run the family care home business, when he's not driving his F12, GT3, 964, 930...

EDIT: Mum moves into a dementia care home later this month, £1750 a week.
