What could be considered a healthy alcohol ?

I love beer, but since a mild heart attack and the discovery of type 2 (the fat one) diabetes i barely have a 330ml bottle a month..

i feel really guilty to myself if i even have a pint whilst out eating a meal these days so wondered if there's something a little more forgiving for the human body that i could consider.

I hate red wine, i couldn't even do 2 sips, so that is out - any other suggestions please?

This works with any gin, Hendricks somehow have conned people to think theirs is any different with cucumber than the next.

The whole gin industry has conned people into thinking it's anything more than vats of bought in alcohol and a few aromatics!

Very true! The aromatics to make it all worthwhile though.

Tanqueray 10 or Bombay Saphire Premium with Schweppes slimline tonic.

Yes, those are in one sense unnecessarily expensive gins but they taste good and it's unlikely to make much of a dent in your household budget.

My wife's favourite tipple of a Friday evening is a Opihr Black Lemon with a Fever Tree Ginger Ale.

Fever Tree taste identical to the rip off one from Lidl.

The other option could be low or alcohol free?

There's plenty of new, and passable alcohol free beers out in the market, i've dipped into the market when i've been designated driver rather than drinking coke etc. It depends on what style of beer you normally drink?

Worth trying out Lucky Saint, Heinken, Free damm, Guinness zero, Adams Ghost Ship. A few from Brewdog. Leffe has recently released one. Loads of IPA's as the flavours hold up well. It's the biggest growth sector in the Beer industry at the moment.

Honestly after a heart attack and type 2 I'd be knocking it on the head completely rather than messing around.

I like a beer myself but gave it up completely while I trained for the London Marathon a couple of years ago. Missed it for a couple of weeks then not at all.

I would have thought a pint would be fine as long as it isn't messing with your blood sugar.

Asking for 'healthy alcohol' is like asking for healthier cigarettes, or healthier smack. None of it is good for you.

I am a T1D. Gin and slim line tonic is the best answer other than not drinking.

I enjoy a glass of white wine every weekend, but I treat it as quality rather than quantity.

I think the alcohol free beers are still laden with calories so not great for your weight. (Which I assume is not ideal).

Could try a vodka, lime & soda, AKA a 'Skinny bh'. Low in calories (relatively speaking).

Or just stick with water. Sparkling if you are feeling devilish.

Everything in balance! A pint of beer with your meal once a week is not going to be your downfall!

What's the rest of your week like, food and drink wise? What's your portion size like? How much activity are you doing?

I think everything in balance and moderation is the way forward!

PS I have a terrible diet and exercise too much, I am proof you cannot out exercise a bad diet!

Healthy and alcohol should not be in the same sentence.

If you are only consuming a pint a week is try some of the alcohol free beers. AF Heineken or Guinness is very good.

Even though hundreds of studies say a little is good for your health?

I can. I find 30-40 miles a week doesn't do it but about 50-60mpw running or at least 150 miles cycling does it for my intake.

Sticks.

If you're eating out, what you eat can probably have a bigger impact than one beer. You're probably familiar with low GI foods already.

I have found that if a beer has a strong enough taste, having a soda shandy works reasonably well. If you're working to get fitter then maybe use it as a reward for achieving targets you set yourself during the week. It's difficult to change everything at once but as you see success you'll probably want a beer less.
