My wife has been refered from the GP to the NHS for IVF. Does anyone have any experience how long the waiting time is from being refered to treatment starting on the NHS?

If it's like 1 year plus I'll go private but if it's about 6 months then we will wait. We only get 1 IVF treatment with the NHS which is annoying as some areas are entitled to 3 IVF treatments on the NHS.

Pretty sure it’s postcode dependant. But it really shouldn’t be available on the NHS in its current state imo.

Rather my taxes pay towards simons123 wife’s treatment, than the fiasco of sex changes etc

Think it took us around 18 months from first referral to actual treatment, but that was around 15 years ago. We went private in the end and wish we had done much sooner to maximise chances of success….

A couple of years ago when I was on telly for a few mins with a certain welsh comedian. The discussion of where in the country offered IVF on the NHS came up. Seems a lot of trusts in Wales offer IVF, however in England its very much a postcode lottery. That being said a lot of trusts are starting to offer it again, but they usualy work with a private clinic.

But be under no illusions there are hoops to jump through, age and BMI being the main ones. If your partner is overweight, or over age then its game over.

From a bloke whose partner has been through 3 rounds of IVF, and on our last embryo transfer before we consider our options.
I'd suggest saving at least £10k if you decide to go private, as its costly and doesnt always work first time.

IF you do go private go with the clinic you feel the most comfortable with, one we used in London, on Harley street, felt like they were only after money, yet our current clinic is like day over night.

Good Luck

Ours was earlier this year, not IVF but PGD which needs it so Guys only

Gave the nod to guys, had an intro meeting 1-2 months later
Egg collection process was 3-5 months after that
Egg screening (you wont need this) took 3 months
Implant a month later.

That was all kicking off just over a year ago - we're 32 weeks down at the moment

(for those saying its not viable on the NHS the one-off cost of this is a lot better versus the lifetime care of somebody with SEN, we did only get 3 full cycle attempts to first child, any more and I have to pay £12-15k a cycle)

We were waiting ages with NHS with not much happening, so we went private.

Been through the checks and some other bits, now been told no egg donors for 12 months in our area.

So looking at going abroad for it.

In short, everything seems very slow.

3 years ago in West Sussex it was really quick.

Our GP referred us to someone, we saw her in maybe a couple of months, the funding application was submitted and approved in maybe a month, we chose our clinic and must have started a couple of months later. I seem to recall we could have started a month earlier but delayed it due to a holiday or work travel commitments.

It was definitely less than 6 months from start to finish. The longest wait was all down to Mrs J's cycle to complete all the tests, that can be frustrating.

You are lucky to get IVF on the NHS, missus had PCOS and we did years of work with the quacks with nothing past metformin.

Good luck with it.
