My other half is suffering from a weird gut cramp problem that seems to just come out of the blue at random times.

Stomach cramps start up, followed by vomiting. This can continue for 12 hours. Nothing stays down, not even water. After 12 hours or so, the cramps die down and she is back to normal.

Nobody has been able to diagonse it. She takes omeprazol to combat acid reflux regularly.

She's gone a whole year without an attack but just recently she's had two inside of a week.

We can't work out what triggers it. It's not food related. I suspect its stress related as her mother has been taken ill lately and may be about to peg it.

The cramps are really bad and they keep her awake all night, with lots of dry retching. There's no diarrhoea.

We're at a loss as to what to try to combat it. We've tried buscopan as soon as the cramps start but that doesn't seem to help either.
we were thinking of maybe trying an anti seasick pill.

It's been going on for years, but sometimes she can go for a year without an attack.

Anyone had experience of something like this?

It sounds not dissimilar to gastritis

The concern would be subacute gut obstruction / volvulus / appendicitis / femoral hernia or possibly an intermittent 'twisted ovary'.

GP -> Gastroenterology -> CT scan or MRI +/- Obs&Gynae would all be appropriate.

Get it looked into.

I know you say it's not food related but my wife had gallstones and these symptoms sound familiar.

Good luck.

I have had almost the exact same symptoms (including hot/cold flushes) for 25 years now. Multiple investigations including tubes being put where they should never be put.

Conclusion: IBS (aka, somethings not right, but we don’t know what it is). No food allergies (believe me, I’ve tried everything). Feel bad for her, for me it just comes on for no reason (although anxiety does seem to trigger it).

Thanks everyone.

We've ruled out food as it's too random. The only factor I think it has in common with is stressing about something. It seems to occur a day or so after something that she was stressed out about.

She had a small hernia op a few years ago. A colonoscopy / barium meal showed up 'scar tissue' in the bowel but there was no further treatment. A hiatus hernia was also mentioned as a cause of reflux.

She has reflux quite often and that Is food related but the omeprazol keeps that in check.

It's odd that she can be 100% free of issues for 12 months and then have two attacks in the last week. As I mentioned, I put this down to worrying about her mother, who is near the end of life.

Once the cramps and vomiting pass, after 12-18 hours, she's fine again.

Stomach cramps are defo one of the symptoms of stress but thats not an easy thing to address. I was just hoping there might be some medication that would calm down the cramps, once an attack starts up.

Definitely sounds like stress and/or anxiety (from a fellow sufferer)

Sorry to keep harping on about gluten but hot flushes is one of the symptoms.

Please forgive my ignorance on gluten intolerance (and please take this post in the spirit in which it is intended), but how can you possibly explain a year's gap between attacks if it was gluten intolerance?

Surely this would crop up more regularly?

Try getting in a pre or probiotic and a digestive enzyme too, Omeprazole whilst an effective short term solution to AR it is the worst thing for gut health as is stress.

I'm not hugely surprised, doctors rarely 'do' diet, so I amill make a suggestion.
My suggestion is to start eating an 'older', pre victorian diet.

That is, food and water without chemicals, or processing.

Have a watch of Dr. Sten Ekberg:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmRH6sv9rnA

and look at what he saysd about what food to eat, and what to avoid.
Also if you have a fluoride toothpaste.. well, fluorides are are deadly and insidious anyway, but more to the point they are antiseptic - the last thing a delicate stomach needs.

Also look at zeolite for a detox, and detoxing generally.
In addition I'd suggest the old book 'The Secret Life of Plants' (Christopher Bird) to get a feel about what food is and should be.

Oh, and buy a bread machine, and make your own break with organic wholemeal flour - that has cured 'gluten intolerance' stomach pains before: the 'Chorleywood' type foam bread (any bread that goes mouldy, rather than dry) is as welcomed by the stomach as cardboard.

Water - buy a filter or/and distiller, a distiller is interesting.. as you get to see what gunk is in the water, but again - toxic fluoride may be in there too: the stomach gets all we eat and drink, to natural, kind food and drink is my suggestion of a cure.

Numerous systemic health benefits are also possible side effects of this diet too, of course.

Good luck.

You make a fair point and I appreciate your tact. I agree I could well be wrong but I think that gluten intolerance isn’t considered often enough and it often goes undetected. So when I hear f gastro-intestinal symptoms I always reflexively suggest this.

Also, I had it all my life but only « realised » I had it about 15 years ago because I had ignored the symptoms.

So yes, I agree with you but my point is, what harm could it do by eliminating the possibility? smilebeer

If it's brought on by stress and anxiety then deal with that.

Very similar for my wife too. She had several episodes, of intense abdominal cramping, vomiting - separated by a number of years, before diagnosis.
