Hi all, does anyone have any experience of horrendous knee pain a day after squats?

Sitting and lifting my leg is excruciating as is lifting my leg to walk up the stairs.

Literally feels like my knee is coming apart.

Would straps help or is it time to call it a day on squats, been going to the gym for 30 year without a problem .

Where is said pain exactly?

Look into patella tendinitis. If it's this then it might be your upper leg muscles are going into spasm. Lots of leg stretches and a deep tissue massage will be your friend.

Pain is mostly at the front above the kneecap, pain has gone today and its leg day so I guess I will see tomorrow.

Maybe what Ambleton said or my favourite recurring ailment.... pre-patellar bursitis!

Such fun it is!

Always using knee sleeves for squatting these days which generally helps. Or if I feel "off" then squats or any knee loading is just avoided.

Tempted to try those patella straps that Eddie Hall uses and promotes. See how they compare to sleeves. If anything they'll be less sweaty during the warmer months.

It could be that you're not getting your glutes firing properly. Look into doing some warm up exercises like glute bridges and some band work, before working through some light weights to get everything moving nicely.

I use knee sleeves but only when I get up to heavier working sets, and have no problems with my knees anymore after a good warm up. Even when I train at 5am and its -4 biggrin

Does it feel like someone is trying to prize your kneecap off with a crowbar?

Yes, immediate excruciating pain, like a live wire has just been shoved down between the top of my kneecap and thighbone

Eta walking along is fine its lifting my leg to go upstairs, put weight on it on the next step and jesus christ!!

This is my thread earlier on this year. A good physio sorted me right out.

Rest your knee, do a squat alternative for a few weeks (hack squat, leg press, Bulgarian etc). Recheck your form as it sounds like you have a chronic injury (ie it won't go away until you cease the cause of the complaint), caused by poor technique or possibly overtraining.

As above, find a good phsyio!

(Mine found the muscles were not working in even amounts, so knee was being pulled sideways - given excersizes to even out the muscles, and if I do them my knees are lot less sore)

+1 for physio

A lot of people have weird patellar tracking during knee flexion extension. Common in cycling.

Common because we spend a lot of time inactive making our hip stabilising muscles weak then we challenge our legs with exercise.

Physio will check form and advise. Suspect glute (especially glut med) exercises will be prescribed. I guess the sleeves etc limit the patella's ability to track out of line but not a real fix IMO.
