Hi All.

53 – a tad overweight but have lost most of my muscle.

After many years of lifting/running/biking etc I have been very sedentary for the past few years and really need to get back on it.
Question is do I go back in with a 5x5 routine which I have used in the past or go for a more full body workout.
What are the easiest apps to use now – SL5x5 is good, takes care of all progression but are there any others out there?

Hello.

In my 60s

For last 18 months I've been going to the gym

Around 3x a week.

I do mostly weights. This had helped so many aches and pains and improved my overall fitness. I don't do much cardio.
Maybe 20 mins a week in total on the bike or X trainer

I find a sustainable plan is good which is why 3x a week is realistic and achievable.

Do a program that includes all the major muscle groups, do at least 20 - 30 minutes of cardio a day, even a brisk walk is far better than nothing, its very straight forward.

get yourself down to a Brazilian jujitsu club, your body and mind will thank you and hate you at the same time, 6 months you'll be in good shape

What to do will depend on your ability. What's your range of motion like, any niggling injuries, bad back, knees etc. Also what is your goal? Just want to feel better, lose weight, get strong etc

Strong lifts is as good a place as any to start. Pretty difficult to screw it up and all the lifts with the exception of the squat and dl are pretty difficult to injure yourself on.

Just do anything that gets you in the habit of regular exercise. A simple note pad or note on your phone us enough to track progress. Trying to over complicate things with an app is an excuse to put off getting started.

Personally I'm not a fan of gyms, just doing weights bit of cardio etc.

But I do love a good circuits class as it's a bit of everything, and I'm competitive so always end up trying to "beat" the next guy doing the class.

I'd had 3-4 months off due to a number of things so started back at a new place (circuits only) in the last month, the first few classes were killers if I am honest, I felt so out of shape and according to my HRM I had burnt 650 kcals and max heart rate was high 170's, average around 160. In just over a month twice a week it's become "enjoyable" with no less effort, the weights being used has increased but the calories burnt has dropped to about 550 and heart rates have dropped by around 20bpm.

I can only assume that the metrics show my fitness is improving and I generally do feel a lot better in myself.

I've also got Zwift for cardio at home, just need to get a little more time to start back on the bike over winter to bring that back up to speed also.

If it's about the long term, then what is more fun to you? Do that. But also eat less.
