Lingering Cold
Discussion
Anyone else been ill recently with a cold that just wont fk off. Im in to week 4 now. Definitely a cold and not flu, no fever or aches. Have hardly been sick for the last few years due to lock downs and WFH i guess, never did get covid.
Wonder if this is covid. I did do a test but that was negative but then I think the LFTs are st anyway.
Most symptoms have gone but the cough just persists. Feel tired despite sleep well, 7-8 hours a night.
Bored of it now

I've had one. Managed to get rid of it through combination of:
- wrapping up in bed so I sweat (no idea why this works)
- Night Nurse to make sure I sleep
- First Defence up my nostrils.
I normally do this at the first sign of a cold and it knocks it on the head before it gets established. This time I didn't catch it early enough but the regime still worked.

Interesting, some years ago an ex of mine advised me IIRC, hot water+hot whiskey+lemon+honey before bed, wrap up + sweat it out.- wrapping up in bed so I sweat (no idea why this works)

So I did, was 100% well within 48hrs. Forgot about that until you mentioned invoking the sweat function.
ps, think there was ginger involved <important addition for anyone considering it

I had it for about 3 weeks.
I'd not wish it on anyone. I'm very rarely ill, I don't think I've had a day or work sick in 10-12 years, and don't mind admitting that I told my wife I'd never felt so ill in my life. And that wasn't man flu talking.
She did agree with me... It was inevitable she'd catch it from me.

Into week 4. Almost gone. Still get breathless going up stairs.
My wife went to the doc. They said her chest sounded like an asthmatic even though she isn't. Was given Amoxicillin which almost shifted it. But not quite. She's much better, but this tickly cough is awful. Feels like my head is going to explode.

Yep, I had it for 5-6 weeks, kept having the odd day where I was starting to feel I was recovering only for the symptoms to start all over again, each time starting with a sore throat for 24 hours before progressing into a head cold once again, it was as though I just kept re-infecting myself over and over again.
Does seem to have finally mostly cleared up a couple of weeks back although I'm still quite wheezy and bizarrely sneezing all the time, probably 15 or 20 times a day.

Maybe an upper respiritory infection? I had that and antibiotics sorted it out. I had a peristant light cough.
Tbf they all are. 90 odd % are still viral. No need for abx. Vit C does nothing to cure. Weak evidence for prevention at best.
The only proven 'medication' to improve viral stuff is Zinc. Forget the dose but I'm sure Google can help. Only proven to reduce length by 24hrs if taken from the start though.
Anywho for the OP: water, good food, graded exercise. That is do a bit more (length/duration etc) each day.
I find resting more just makes me more lethargic so tend to just crack on. Doesn't work for everyone.
Also lots of horrible colds/flu cos we haven't seen each other in work/homes/playgroup etc.
That said if your cough lasts for 6 weeks or more regardless of what symptoms you've had speak to your GP please.
