A week ago I felt so wretched with post covid symptoms , I booked a telephone appointment. Feeling better now so I should cancel it (due in another 10 days)

Another side of me says leave it until the day before, you never know I might want it for something or other.

Is this going to become a thing with long lead times? Booking appointments "just in case"

I would keep it and maybe cancel a couple of days before. Provides a balance between your potential needs in the face of a parlous NHS and not depriving someone, if you don't ultimately need it.

This. Also, you feel better now, but there is a chance you could deteriorate again.

Seventeen days for a telephone appointment, really? How long for an actual face to face? I’ve heard things were quite bad, but didn’t think it was this bad.
Fifty euros to see your GP here, but you will get an appointment usually within 48 hours, much less in an emergency.

If you don't need an appointment you've booked, cancel it as early as possible so that someone who does need it can have it.

Oh I think I'll give it a couple of days to be sure then cancel. Wondering if anyone booked appointments speculatively though.

I'm chair of the Patient Participation Group at my local practice (44,000 registered patients, nine surgeries). Some patients have been known to book an appointment a week 'just in case'.

That's pretty shocking.

Keep the appointment and ask the doctor if the inability to make a basic decision is the sign of something more serious?

I think it is where you live and your Practice.

Ours has 2 systems, patient access (book repeat meds and all sorts of other things)
Patient Triage Form, (Tell us the problem we will ring you back same or next day)

27.09.2022 used the triage for 2 issues, Dr called back the same day and In the practice the next for the examinations, bloods taken and booked for a camera down my mouth a few days later.

More bloods taken before I went to the hospital, full count.

17.10.2022 - CT Scan
26.10.2022 - Dr called me back with results and upped the meds.

Last week the appointments came through for the 2 hospital surgery dates.

At this point there were 2 Doctors keeping an eye on my case and taking it in turns to think what to do next.

Dr is booked to call me on the 21st.

I think it does depend on where you are to be fair.

It's not so bad these days now that the booking system is centralised however DNAs (Did Not Attend) remain a problem, in September out of 24,314 appointments offered 1,245 were DNAs.
