Young child behavioural assessments
Discussion
Hi collective, a request for help here. Our four year old is displaying some challenging and saddening behaviours. Constant tantrums, extreme sadness, violence and extreme anxiety/emotional fragility. She is having trouble making friends, sleeping and having a normal day. It's heartbreaking.
It is well outside the norm for the kids of her age that we know, so I don't think my expectations of a four year old's behaviour are unrealistic.
Has anyone else had the same? I am thinking of an assessment as some of these are classic symptoms of a deeper issue: but rather than diagnose/ignore, I'd like to get the professionals in.
We are in London so if anyone else has had cause to use such services, it would be helpful. Internet searches are one thing, but I know that parents get sold all sorts of snake oil, so any guidance/recommendations would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks for any tips,
HF.

Not had any personal contact, but Prof Tanya Byron might be worth a call.

We were with Dr Sarah Panjwani at the Portland hospital.
We were working towards a private diagnosis and she seemed great with our eldest. I had a lot of confidence in her and the team there.
In the end, we got a diagnosis on the nhs during covid and are now at a new school with a much better understanding of the challenges.

My other bit of advice that I wished I’d known sooner was to really get into Dr Ross Greene and the “kids do well if they can” approach to understanding kids with challenging behaviours. I read many many books and articles trying to find an answer and it was Dr Greene that does it best for me.
Start with the intro videos on YT and then get the books (explosive child and lost at school) as well as the “lives in the balance” web site and fb groups.
In my case - this was life changing in terms of understanding what we were actually doing while our child was getting excluded from school on a weekly basis !
Ps - feel free to PM me if you have any other questions etc.
