Years ago I fractured my heel when a cyclist ran into me. At the time my heel hurt a bit but stopped after a week or so. Then a few months later I was running down some stairs when I found myself in real pain, unable to walk, went to hospital told it was a fracture.

Now from time to time it gives me discomfort and very occasionally it hurts badly. I was in Liverpool airport a few weeks ago and it suddenly started hurting, so much so I had to take my shoe off but after 30 minutes of resting it, it stopped hurting. On the plane the foot swelled somewhat. Now three weeks later not felt anything since.

I am curious why this keeps happening? I would have thought it might be linked to the weather for example, but it seems random. Been looking on the net for an explanation, but maybe someone here can shed some light.

Sounds like a malunion. Your bone didnt heal properly in its correct alignment so it is malfomed and you probably have a bit that sticks out that you knock every so often, possibly causing another tiny fracture or as you have seen bruising under the skin and swelling.

Malunion
Impingement
Post-traumatic osteoarthritis
Inflammation
Tarsal Tunnel syndrome
Lots of possibilities

Why not ask a Foot&Ankle specialist to help you face to face.

I have the same issue with my ankle. At first it always reacted on the weather changing or walking too much. Now it can occasionally hurt without a visible reason.
