Considering trying Contact Lens again... whats the latest?
Discussion
I tried Contacts many mnay years and just could not get on with them. These were either gas permeable or early "soft£ lesn and I hated them.
I am now having a think about trying them again, after I heard you can get the equivalent of varifocals in a contact.
Back then, I also wasnt happy with the quality of the viosn they give, and the optician at that time claimed I was very critical of my vision and that contacts would give the same clarity as specs......
Had a quick look on the web, and it appears awash in types and brands.
What would you suggest I try ?

What is your prescription & how old are you?
Aged 57 Not sure what my script as , but its quite strong on one side. ( I know thats not a huge help). Last guy didnt give me a copy as I was buying from him anyway,
I am also on the brink of Glaucoma - have had laser stuff and take daily drops to kepe this at bay.
What about that new kind that doesn’t need you spend 15 minutes poking yourself in the eyes repeatedly to get them in or out?
Do you have an astigmatism?
Optician told me that the quality would also be as good as spectacles. It wasn’t. Firstly the prescription was further away than what i needed. Secondly because of the need for correct alignment for the cylinder correction (for the astigmatism) every time i blinked, they span around and too 2-3 seconds to settle. fking annoying. Maybe that’s what you (OP) experienced when you didn’t find them as good?

I'm very happy with my Alcon Dailies Total 1 varifocals.
All good opticians should measure you and give you a few types to try (free). Eyes are not worth mucking around with - get the best you can (of course, imo).
100% agree RE quality. Paid extra for high spec Essilor lens last year in my specs. All good opticians should measure you and give you a few types to try (free). Eyes are not worth mucking around with - get the best you can (of course, imo).
Did you have varifical specs before contacts ? Curious to how they compare.
I gave up wearing them a few years back, but my wife still has them.
She gets hers at Boots on a monthly disposable basis, except they despatch 30 pairs every month on the same day. It’s a real faff to get the extra ones that are needed, plus some to account for accidents during placement. Their deliveries are also becoming haphazard. She rants about them quite often, but won’t change as she likes some of the staff at the local branch, although judging by what she says I can’t see why.
If starting from scratch, I wouldn’t recommend going to Boots.
Not strictly the information you wanted, but potentially relevant.

I buy my lenses online. Much cheaper and great service.
I've used daily disposable varifocal lenses because I couldn't be bothered with solutions and stuff. They're good, but close up isn't great whatever brand I've used.
I also tried extended wear which you can sleep in, much cheaper, but I found I needed drops first thing in the morning.
Currently wearing prescription Ray Ban Clubmasters but I need to get my eyes tested so may well go back to lenses again.
Vision Direct are good for online purchase.

Started with contacts about 2001 after wearing specs since I was about 10 (1963) the feeling of freedom from the scaffolding around my face was fantastic. These were the one pair a month type, one eye for long distance, one for close up. Sounded weird but worked in practice.
Sadly, over the last 8 years or so, my eyesight changed and I got to the point where the long/close set up didn't work anymore. I'm now back to hateful specs again. Would love to go back to contacts.

Apropos Essilor, over 50% of people globally have them, such is their market dominance. Oh and they are owned by Luxottica, who are producers of about a third of frames. Hobbyhorse over Did you have varifical specs before contacts ? Curious to how they compare.

I tried some Specsaver Vari's and they just didnt didnt work for me at all.
I am using varifocal dailies. I only wear them at the weekend as glasses are much better for working.
I found that I had to dial down my prescription by .25 in each eye as with contacts my distance vision was not so good. This means my close up is not as sharp as glasses but good enough for the pub
As others have said, I just ordered a pack of 30 online and that is my float for the extra days or damages. The basic subscription gives me 30 of each eye every 3 months and means 50% off glasses and a free eye test every year.

I had to start wearing contact lenses for my career. RAF aircrew. Flew on the E3D Sentry and was part of the fire fighting team onboard so had to wear a full face fire fighters mask.
I bloody hated the things to start with. Took me ages to get them in (like an hour) and often looked like I’d had a few rounds with Tyson.
Eventually I just found a technique to get them in that worked for me. Not the technique the optician recommended but someone I knew who was pre them.
Now I can get them in in 20 seconds. It takes longer to get them out the packet now.
I swapped from a brand I can’t remember to Acuvue Moist Daily’s (paid for by the RAF), it was transformational to me. I often forget I’ve gotten them in they are so comfortable I have to set a reminder to remind me to take them out.
I’m thinking of leaving the RAF shortly so I will be asking on here about eye surgery as I fancy having my vision laser corrected.

Replying to this, instead of starting a new thread.
I’m thinking of getting contacts again, but the problem I have is, I have hay fever.
When I had lenses in the past (around 5 years ago) I remember my eyes getting dry. Is there something new around that won’t dry my eyes out? What about my hay fever? Is there something else to consider, perhaps drops etc??
It’s either I get lenses or prescription sunglasses and the thought of paying €700+ for glasses, sun glasses and lenses for both pairs is, ironically, eye watering.

Reference hay fever. I too suffer occasionally. I’ve found having the contact lens in stops me getting itch eyes. Although with me the main symptoms are sneezing not so much the itch eyes.
Reference the price. Yeah it’s one of the reasons I am considering laser eye surgery. I recon within 5 years they will have paid for themselves.
I also shoot so have to have prescription inserts for my safety glasses as well.
Due to my job I live in two locations so I seem to have to buy more pairs of glasses as well so I have a backup pair for each location.
