Morning all,

Turned a room at home into a small gym. Treadmill, power rack, bench, TRX, few bars and an assortment of plates so far.

Looking for some dumbbells though, and whilst I might prefer individual sets of them, I don't really want to lose the room I'd need to put something like this in:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dripex-Dumbbell-Weight-St...

So, I'm looking at adjustable ones.

What's really the difference though, between these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07PXS7QD3?aaxitk=6e55...

&

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078HDGG7H/ref=sspa_dk...

??

Anyone got any advice/experience/useful thoughts?

Cheers

I did look at those when considering my gym setup. I eventually went for a weight tree, free weights, smaller bars for dumbbell use, and longer bars for squats/bench etc. at the time I was squeezed up the back of the garage behind a car so had very little space.

With the tree it takes up the same floor space by building upwards, and I’m not limited by the lower weights on the adjustable dumbbells.

If getting started get a set of Olympic discs /bars so you can grow into them. The standard weights will be fine for a time but you’ll outgrow them if you really get into it (due to weight/space limits on the standard sized bars).

Something like this would be good as it has holders for the bars too

Be aware that the 2 Amazon dumbells quoted are for single dumbells and not pairs.

I have the Bowflex 1090 (10 to 90 pounds) dumbells and they are good. You'll never outgrow them. Bit annoying that they're in pounds and not KG. However, they're very expensive (as a pair) and a further 150 quid or so for the stands. However, i've hardly used them since buying an Olympic (2 inch/50mm) barbell and weights kit. https://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/ex-display-bo...

If you already have a barbell, look at Stronglifts 5x5.

I have a few bars already, one that takes 28mm plates, and a curl bar and international bar (Just an olympic bar that's shortened to 6ft as I didn't have room for a 7 foot one without scraping up the wall, because of where I've bolted the rack to the wall) that take 50mm plates, but my trainer has me using dumbbells most of the time to sort out the slight uneveness I have across my arms and chest.

Yes, I'm aware those are priced individually.

I do like the look of the bowflex ones, and they'd match my treadmill.

I'd considered just getting some shorter bars, but the plates I've got are pretty big, they can make dumbbells a bit unwieldy in my experience.

The bowflex stuff is decent, there were a ton of copies that came out over the pandemic which I haven't tried.

I picked up a set of MensHealth ones the other day (not picked up as in bought literally picked them up) the went up to 24kg so perfect for a beginner. They seemed really well made and ergonomic but once I’d googled them they’re not cheap so I’ll be carrying on poncing about with my threaded ones.

I’ve got some MuscleSquad ones which I’ve had for a couple of years and are doing fine!

That's where my rack came from.

Which ones have you got?

The 32.5kg ones look really smart, the 25kg ones, not so much.

Similarly priced to the bowflex ones I've been looking at. Think it's narrowed down to those 2 now.
