Fed up of a life of glasses and contacts, now considering having laser eye, it appears I am suitable for it.

Can people tell me who they went with and their experiance, did you get 20:20 vision after? I have a prescription of -4.75 in both eyes currently.

It’s a lot of cash to splash but I think it’s worth it but want to hear both sides of peoples stories

Had it in 2001. Best money I ever spent. Was very short sighted, needed glasses all the time. Ended up with vision sharper than 20/20…!

Loved going swimming etc after the operation.

Putting on proper sunglasses after years of crappy tinted specs was a revelation.

I can’t think of anything better than putting your glasses in the bin a few minutes after eye surgery.

I had mine done at optimax in Bristol in 2018. I think they're still going. As above, I ended up with 6/6 vision.

I'm now over 50 and the last 12 months or so, my eyesight has deteriorated somewhat, I now need glasses to read and do anything close up. Long range is still fine at the moment. But I can tell I'm on a slippery slope as I know it's getting worse. I'm a bit gutted.

But, definitely some of the best money I ever spent for the 20+ yrs that I had perfect vision. I'm pretty sure you can't have it done a second time, or I would.

Optical Express - had a nightmare, ended up suing them. My eyesight is improved somewhat but it's nowhere near 20/20

Your post doesn't add up. If it was done in 2018 you've had four years good vision & if you've had 20 years it must have been done in 2002 or earlier.

Your current experience is whay I asked how old the OP is.

Went for it last year with optical express.
They said Laser surgery wasn’t going to work for me and recommended lens replacement. I was very borderline, like you OP I got very fed up with a box full of glasses.

.

Worth every penny…£7k

Eyesight was 20.20 on long vision but rubbish reading, eyes were slightly worse for long vision afterwards but worth it to read and not carry any glasses around with me ever since.
Had to go back for yag laser about 2 weeks ago to clear up a bit of clouding all within my warranty so “free” for this and now back to 95% perfect.
Not saying it’s for everyone but I have absolutely no regrets.

Good luck with your choice.

I’m 30.

I see a couple of you had it a long time back, it seems it’s moved on a lot since then, as most medical stuff does

Yep, the procedure that I had was pretty brutal to be honest. Each eye 6 months apart as they had to scrape off the lens before conducting the laser surgery. That then had to grow back, so couldn't see anything for weeks and the days after the surgery were extremely painful.
then back 6 months later to go through it all again for the second eye.

Now it’s definitely a better procedure to have done.

I am 40 next year and have been wearing glasses and contacts for as long as i can remember.

Nearly went ahead a few years ago but was advised against when they found out i worked in a joinery workshop as the dust could cause an issue.
However now I’m doing less in the workshop with an aim to sell in a few years, so looking again!

Had an eye test last week and my prescription is still the same, 10years and counting now.

Laser eye surgery does nothing for reading distance deteroriation as you grow older. Close up work is controlled by eye muscles which inevitably deteriorate with age. Eye surgery reshapes the lens which corrects distance vision.

You may well already understand this but your post doesn’t quite convey it.

So reading glasses are always going to be needed usually in your early fifties, but your distance sight will only slightly deteriorate and you probably only need glasses to make things at distance super sharp….

As I need to read all the time, I now wear vario focals, which sharpen up my long distance eye sight by a few lines on the test, but allow me to read.

I can go without glasses still for instance when I don’t need to read anything as my eye sight is still generally good, but a bit deteriorated from when I had the surgery.

You can have it done a second time, but it isn’t a given. It depends on the thickness of your eye lens, and it might be able to take another surgery. I was told my lens were particularly thin and unlikely to take a second surgery.

I had mine done 10 yrs ago in my early 40s. Absolutely recommend it but I went to Moorfields for it. That’s where you’ll end if it goes wrong so you might as well go straight there. I had similar vision to you.

I had to get glasses when I started to drive. Could do without them most of the time, didn't mind too much having to wear them but hated the expense of them when they broke. Researched laser eye surgery and spoke to others who raved about it enough for me to take the plunge.

In 2003 only one place did it in Belfast so I opted for a bigger business in Manchester, initial consultation determined I was suitable, low prescription, stable prescription and only 29. Second visit a month later I got it done, both eyes same time which isn't recommended in case of issues.

Didn't have any infection or issues as I followed the aftercare guidance. At that time it was £1000 an eye which was quite a lot to me but Belfast was £1500. Best money I've spent it's more of a saving really.

Twenty years on I'm still great. Not wearing specs meant I didn't get conjunctivitis anymore. My reading ability at times seems to be deteriorating but that's due to aging but very much in early stages.

One thing I was told at the time was an increased sensitivity to light. I have to wear shades more than others do. Street lights at night are a bit star bursty not well defined but your brain adapts to the new normal. Newer procedures might have moved the game on greatly.

Had mine done in Dec 2020. LASIK with Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (Laservision), about £4k i think.
I was 40 at the time, long sighted around -2 in each eye with astigmatism.

Simply amazing, i should have done it a decade beforehand. The day after the surgery i was walking around outside with no problems at all, apart from the blood shot eyes.

Well that's a good age as you should get 20 years or so of good vision before it starts to drop off again. I'd suggest you do a lot of careful research before deciding where to have it done:

You could try contacting member 968 who may be able to suggest surgeons to approach.

I went for a consultation a few years back, and they said for me in particular it'd come to ~£9k per eye. PER EYE.

I have astigmatism and I'm colourblind - No idea if that's what influences it, but at that cost I can't justify it at all. I'm only 27 so I suppose I'd "get my use" out of it, but not at that cost.

I'm looking to have another go with contacts lenses. I tried them years ago and found them continually re-adjusting themselves and my vision was never quite as good.

Thanks,

I’m not 100% set on where to get it done but I suppose all companies will have good and bad reviews.

You don't have to get it done by a high street "company" though, you can have it done privately by a consultant surgeon who also holds positions in the NHS & will take personal care of your procedure &, most importantly, any aftercare checks.

You really want to minimise any risk of an operation going wrong when It involves your eyes. They can't just go in again to solve a problem.
