I hurt my knee playing cricket a few years ago and was diagnosed with chondromalacia patella and since physio didn't improve i was told i need surgery

But due to the lockdown in 2020 i postponed it as it was not a major irritation, but now i think its time to do it as it wont anyway go away on its own and will only get worse with age,the surgeon said he will go for a keyhole surgery and i could get back the same day,he however said its a not 100% fool proof and there is a chance it can come back in few year ( i also had a colleague who underwent surgery for a meniscus tear and it didnt improve at all)

Another Dr i consulted opted for open surgery (not key hole) and said it will definitely cure it,he also said my knee car was misaligned (not sure if its due to the injury or not) and he will rectify it

I wonder if anyone had the surgery for this and what was their experience?

Also once disharge (its a 1 day procedure) can I climb stairs as the bedroom at home is on the 1st floor so I would need to climb up and down at least 3 times a day

I had a knee arthroscopy about 15 years ago. I did a lot of research at the time.

I'd be very wary of anyone talking about realigning your kneecap. I'd also want to be crystal clear what the surgeon plans to do about the kneecap cartilage.

Are any of the people you've spoken to specialist knee surgeons?

I take it you haven't had an MRI?

I could climb stairs the same day after my op.

Tbh, I'd proceed with caution. I'd be inclined to pay for a private consultation with someone who only does knees, and see what they think about the way forward.

I don't have any experience with this op but, I'd be asking more questions about the "miss-aligned" knee; I was diagnosed with this in minutes by an orthopod after 20+ years of on/off knee pain. Just under 6 months of physio sorted it out...

There is no good surgical option for patellofemoral pain syndrome. The pain is not correlated with the appearance of the patella and chondromalacia patellae is a pretty outdated term.
I would focus on a good functional physio program and some chronic pain management for non-nociceptive pain.

Had an arthroscopy in both knees about 20 years ago.
My left knee was better for about 5 years but I still get pain on occasions now.
My right is much better.

I had keyhole on both sides. A small hole both sides of my kneecap and one to the rear.
