At 50 years old my eyes are struggling with small print on medicine packets etc

Question is , I've bought some reading glasses, will using glasses help my eye strength/ health or should I go without as long as I can

No shame in using reading glasses at 50.

Why struggle when help is on hand, even the ones at Poundland are quite good, but obviously proper readers in your prescription are better.

No, using the reading glasses will not make your eyes worse.

It's your natural lens losing its elasticity and this will continue regardless.

The science is admitting defeat and wearing glasses to improve vision will not make your eye deteriorate quicker.

Whilst I started with some of those cheap reading glasses I was never really impressed with the clarity even though I could read what I needed. After an eyesight test I got my prescription and took a chance on the two pairs of glasses offer for £15 with Glasses Direct. WOW they are spot on, the clarity of vision is outstanding and prove that a personal prescription lens is far better than a one size fits all for £1 especially as most people may have different prescriptions for each eye and possible astigmatism (like me) making the cheap specs unsuitable.
