Morning,
I shall be booking a doctors appointment next week but wondered if anyone has suffered from what I will describe as sleep apnea.

I’m 5 foot 7, 12 and a bit stone. Never smoked and have maybe a four pack of lager spread over a week. No binges, no late nights. I’m on no drugs at the moment but was using organic sleeping pills and lustral for some for ocd and depression following the death of my wife last August.

I’ve not had covid.

For the last 3 nights I’ve woke up gasping for air at about 3am. I’m in bed promptly by 10pm and a sleep soon after but waking up about 5 hours later in a panic. I struggle for breath and then get in a right mess trying to breath and I make things worse. I take a good 30 mins to calm down. Trying to control my breathing perhaps with my head out of the window to get some cool air. During the day I then struggle to do the most simple tasks , walking around the garden, running upstairs leaves me short of breath. By early evening I’m back to normal. I can fill my lungs with air and take long deep breaths at that time and everything feels normal. No rattles and a good inhale and exhale which suggests my lungs are working to their capacity.

I was so bad last night that my daughter wanted to call an ambulance. I was hanging over the landing gasping for air and she was in a panic.

I have had the odd occasion over the last year but several nights in a row is now a concern.

I’ve stopped eating after 7 and had no alcohol this week. I’m certainly not fit and perhaps a little over weight for my height!

Google obviously says heart problems and I’ll die if I don’t get it sorted .... we don’t have any history of heart problems in our family but of course this is my main concern and will try to get an appointment soon.

Any suggestions to what it could be or anyone had similar? Thank you.

Doesn’t sound like sleep apnea.

Do you fall asleep during the day easily?

My dad apnea and he was completely unaware of it t. Symptoms were tiredness, sleep quickly anywhere and snoring.

He was never gasping for air or in a panic. You may have something like asthma or related that stops you breathing? Have it checked asap.

That's not sleep apnea OP, my dad had sleep apnea for many years before it was diagnosee and it is believed the many years of it being undiagnosed ultimately lead to his death due to an enlarged heart.

With sleep apnea your breathing stops and starts when asleep, this can happen many times during the night but you don't realise, however due to the disruptive sleep you are very tired during waking hours.

Very overweight people tend to suffer with it, my sister has it and has a CPAP machine my dad had one too.

Hope you get whatever it is sorted.

Firstly, as someone who has had diagnosed sleep apnoea for twenty years, most of what you say is correct, apart from the "very overweight people tend to suffer from it". I went undiagnosed for at least seven years and went from a very fit, 70Kg athlete to a 110Kg unwell person who was unable to function, simply due to the lack of help from my GP at the time.
I didn't know what was wrong with me until I chanced across something in 2001 and filled out this questionaire.
OP I urge you to do this ASAP and get an appontment booked immediately with your GP.
One other thing THP99, I also have left ventricular hypotrophy (enlarged heart) which is probably down to the years of having undiagnosed apnea.

Can an enlarged heart be managed at all?

My dad died in his sleep, he just didn't wake up, his enlarged heart was undiagnosed, obviously it was discovered during his post mortem, the Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins had an enlarged heart too.

I am not sure, although I know that my mum had the same condition. The confusion about my condition, is that the doctors are not sure if my sports or the sleep apnoea caused it. I do know hat the later stages of my undiagnosed OSA had an effect of me having to give up sports.
