Not massively concerned, it is however quite swollen and purple (fnar fnar) I assume I am correct in that, there is nothing to be done, stay off it, ice it, take pain pills and leave it a few weeks?

No xray indicated unless appears dislocated. Can strap to other toe for support. Analgesia, elevation and supportive shoes. If better in a few days wasn't broken, if takes a few weeks or more was broken.

Yeah not sure I need to go and get it x-rayed, there was a VERY loud snap when I stubbed it on the wardrobe, but it still appears to be pointing in the right direction, can hobble about but it hurts, quite a lot.

I've broken god knows how many toes over the years, as long as it doesnt look out of place just plenty of pain killers until the swelling goes down and bruising clears.

Snapped mine clean off over Xmas, was pointing in the wrong direction to the other toes. Hospital Xrayed it and strapped it to the other toes. 6 weeks later all was good again. As long as it's not sticking out you may have fractured it and the only thing you can do it strap it up and let it heal itself !

As an update, all was going well with the healing of the offending toe, that was until yesterday when I stubbed it again against a box that Mrs geeks had left in the kitchen doorway, much swearing, damned thing is swollen and purple again (fnar fnar) and I am back to limping....

You need to be careful or you might end up with gangrene and it falls right off like mine did.....
