I recently applied for exemption from the London congestion charge (£10 processing fee) for my car and partners car to be exempted from the London congestion charge due to being disabled, for those rare occasions I stray into London. I uploaded the documents and everything was all sorted.

Whilst on the website I'm reading through other things and then I see something about "disabled taxation class" for vehicles and followed the link. I had NO IDEA that if a vehicle is owned or used by someone with disabilities that you could be totally exempted from road fund license.

I followed the online advice and have sent my V5, along with proof to the DVLA. It does say they refund you but I'm assuming that is if you've paying your road fund license upfront, whereas I've been paying monthly for a long time frown Thankfully my car is in a low band and is about £15 a month

It seems an antiquated system, I'm disabled, not my car, and if I sell it the new owner will have to change it back unless they were themselves disabled of course. Would be better of the DVLA had an online system for this or something.

I'm pretty mindful of benefits etc and what is available if you have disabilities, but I've literally never known about this and it passed me by. Just wanted to make a post to see if anyone else could benefit from my experience or if I've been a clot and this is common knowledge?

Yes I knew about this although mainly because Mrs geeks is disabled. If you have purchased a car from a dealer (especially a new one) they too should have known about this and offered some advice (although that is predicated on your disability being visible)

I assume you collect PiP and are aware of the Motability scheme? Even if you don't take one of their vehicles they can give you some pretty decent advice if you need it.

No my current car came from a second hand "hold aaaaaat your hand" kind of place smile Though actually we did talk about my disabilities because he had terrible problems with his back and noticed the same in me and we commiserated. But I don't think he was probably aware

I do get PIP and motability component but my current car don't cost me £76 or whatever it is a week it is so I'm keeping it and taking good care of it.

Like I say I am genuinely good with knowing what helps on offer just this one thing totally slipped me by.

Very interesting. I work in a school for "disabled" kids and have forwarded on to our comms. manager for the next parent newsletter. Never heard it mentioned at work and nor has my wife and she has a lot to do with this sort of thing.

Yes, but only because I work in IT for a manufacturer, dealing with registrations of new vehicles via the RAV (formerly AFRL) system.

It is indeed a box ticked at first registration to apply the Disabled taxation class. As you say, a tad antiquated to tie it to the vehicle rather than the driver but the cogs of the civil service turn fairly slowly.

AFRL there is a name I haven't heard in a while! Good old reliable mainframe product, VW had a system called DIALOG as well that integrated with it for new car ordering etc
