Is there already an "I drink too much" thread on PH? Looked here and in the Food and Drink section and didn't see one.

Cheers everyone. smile

Yes, there's a thread about giving up, but I think another more general one might still be good.

Agreed, like plain chocolate digestive biscuits, we have no intention of giving up.

I have an issue with alcohol that pretty much whenever I drink, I drink too much. I am fine having a night (or indeed a week) of drinking nothing at all, but if I open up that first beer or mix that first G&T, that pretty much always means it will be several pre-dinner drinks, followed by a bottle of wine and a cigar later. Possibly with a good single malt as a nightcap.

I'm also guilty of using alcohol to help me calm down when I'm having personal stress. In the last 9 months, I've lost a stepparent and a parent, and I definitely find that alcohol somewhat takes the edge off the suffering.

Little and often as I can’t handle handovers anymore.

I don't actually get hangovers, unless a really late session.

Rare these days.

I find wine good, easier to gauge what you've had than spirits. As long as you stick to bottles not boxes.

Nah, they give short measures over there.

I've been necking maybe 50 units a week for 30 years, and recently spent a few days in an acute care ward due to
a case of bad facial cellulitis and I had every type of blood, liver, kidney, urine test done and was expecting a
finger wagging from the doc due to the test results showing my liver was hanging by a thread, or I was fatally diabetic,
but all came back OK.

Not saying what I'm doing is smart, and everyone's different, and my heart might attack me while I'm asleep,
but it sorta makes one wonder where the BMA get this 14 units a week limit from.
Not even a pint a day FFS.

You mean it's not normal to snort 3 litres in a sitting? drunk

Are you here for a good time or trying for a long time?

I don't think it's an either/or. When you're drinking for the sake of it, little enjoyment derived, is when the problems set in.

I gave up about a week before Christmas which I appreciate is a weird time to give up but i have stuck to it since and I don't miss it at all and I do feel lots better for it too. Didn't bother me over Christmas but it weirdly seemed to be other people who took issue with me not wanting alcohol, my in-laws were almost offended by it.
