I know it's a long shot but I have a tooth issue, possibly the root going bad as per xray, booked in for a possible root canal but that's not until mid march, are there any non prescription antibiotics I could take assuming it's gone bad causing tooth ache? I presume that it's a bacterial issue but I had an abscess a long time ago and I was given antibiotics at the time. Is this similar or not? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but there aren't any non-prescription antibiotics. You'll need to see a dentist to assess whether an antibiotic is required or just pain relief.

What causes pain anyway? Inflammation? Infection?

During lockdown I acquired some Amoxycillin from the EU, to treat my sinus infection. No prescription required, though there were some cursory questions form a 'doctor' employed by the website selling the stuff. Amoxy is also the correct drug for an infected tooth/abcess.

Well I've had an abscess before and it was very painful from the get go, I'm not sure this is the same thing but I think it's gum disease, I looked this up and the gum near the tooth is red. I've ordered some listerine for treatment and will be getting a better toothbrush.

The redness and swelling is inflammation in response to the bacterial growth which is feeding off the dead nerve in the tooth, or if it is a gum infection, the same response to a build of general crap underneath the gum where it has become loose round the tooth. Antibiotics will temporarily settle down either problem. If it is the nerve that has died you will need root treatment or an extraction. If it gum/periodontal in origin, it will need deep cleaning round the gum, or extraction if it has gone too far. Either way it will recur if you just take antibiotics.

Is it specific for gum diesease? Missus is a dentist, she talks about corsodyl or what we have in cupboard now, Gengigel.

When we met i wasnt quite so on point with my hygeine having occasion flare ups but the gengigel, a few deep cleans and preventative maintenance (mainly flossing) keeps it all in check now

Thank you for the responses.

The one I chose does the same thing as corsodyl. it should help with bleeding gums and redness.

Its strange humans have this problem, nobody every brushed their teeth during evolution, then again, we didn't consider being a 40 mid-life age... and look at the diet we had, sweet fruits, dirty herbs taken off the ground and raw meat.

So I've been feeling better tooth wise since I've been using the standard listerine mouthwash, should have the better product for gum protection arrive today, just wondering if there is any anti inflammatory drugs I could try if needed, if know ibuprofen is. Are there any mouth specific treatments out there?

Thanks for the responses all.

As a stop Gap until the Dentist can see you, they should be able to provide a course of Amoxicllin. This fixed a tooth abscess for me a while back over lockdown.

You don't have to wait till treatment to get prescription. In fact if it's too bad on the day they might not even do it.

Try corsodyl Mouthwash. It's anti septic.

If the dentist has X-ray it I’m surprised they’ve not offered antibiotics until your appointment. They should be able to do it and leave a prescription for you to collect.
Corsodyl gets a good press and flossing is needed - something I’ve learnt a lot about recently

Well the xray was back in May. The idea was it might stay OK or going bad. After a week of using listerine it is feeling a lot better though still sensitive to chew on so I'm avoiding using that side of the mouth to eat with.

Just call the dentist, they should give you prescription same day - infections can be very bad if left and as others have said they won't fix issue until it has cleared. I had RCT few weeks ago and it's just flared up on other side, luckily dentist saw me same day, booked for another RCT in March and anti-biotics issued.

Horrible pain though - mine is just starting to clear, hope you get it sorted!

I was cycling ibuprofen/paracetemol for the pain, also rinsing with salt/warm water really helps. Also gels/clove oil.

OK so since I've been using the listerine gum protection I've been feeling pretty good re no toothache. It's hurting to apply pressure but eating is fine although I've steered clear of hard things like nuts.
