Now I know it is a huge part of Omicron, but the guy above me has always coughed a fair bit, it is not a cough, more of a "I am trying to stop myself coughing so instead I will clear my throat" A sort of cough precursor if you like, only ever lasts one cough, but he wil do it all night or afternoon perhaps 40 or 50 times.

it is immensely annoying, but I can drown it out with headphones or music, etc. But it must be horrendous for him!

Now I have lived here for nearly a year and it has always been present,

My question is why on earth would you, if you had a cough like this, not try and do something about it, the man is clearly ill or carrying some sort of infection, or has a ridiculous nervous tick or something? he bloody lives with someone aswell so it must be even worse for her for Gods sake!

he is a very odd man, you know the kind of guy that always rushes around everywhere with a Farm foods bag half filled over his arm.

We have a couple of oldish blokes at work who both do this same type of one shot loud single cough. Bloody annoying when you're trying to concentrate, always waiting for the next one.
I'm sure it's a nervous thing. They do it more when they are in conversation. Perhaps they're reminding themselves and others that they're still around in a sort of 'listen, I'm still here, you can hear me cough' kind of way.
We have another bloke who sits there making clicking noises from his mouth all day, flicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth.
Don't get me started on another one who picks the foam stuffing from his chair seat and just drops it on the floor. Looks like a load of mice have been around by the end of the day.
I put these habits down to people having unique methods to help them concentrate - a bit like sticking your tongue out when cutting in a painting line - but at least that's quiet!

Have a neighbour, guess he’s in his mid-30’s who has been hacking his lungs up for the last two years since I moved in. I ask myself the same question, why wouldn’t you get it sorted, unless of course it’s an illness which isn’t or can’t be treated.

FIL does this all the time, very loud and very suddenly. It's so bad I can only cope with him for a day or two before it drives me up the wall. My OH (his daughter) is too polite to say anything to him, but it's beyond belief he's so bad that he doesn't know what it's doing to others.

It can be a reaction to medication, prinindopril (SP) used to do it to me.

A family member is a chronic cougher. Gastroesophageal reflux. I don’t envy them and yes, it is annoying but in my opinion worse for them than it is for me.

How do you know these people aren't seeing doctors or medical professionals, they may have long standing medical conditions. You can't just get a prescription for a magic pill that stops you coughing

As has been stated, medication can cause persistent dry coughs. Ramipril is notorious for it but in my case a switch to Candesartan stopped it instantly.

My O/H is not so fortunate and coughs often, sometimes so much that it can hurt her ribs. She can't help it, changing medication has hasn't really reduced it but we do what we can to mitigate it by keeping the central heating low so that the warm air dries her throat less and we have a humidifier in our bedroom, which helps.

Four or five times a day she'll go for a walk to get some air and after she returns she'll be better for a while. If anyone has any other tips, please share them here.

I have the exact same problem with my neighbour. She's constantly fagging off though which explains the coughing. Quite why something doesn't twig and makes her think "you know what, I should probably do something about this" just underlines what a complete and utter waster she is. I absolutely hate her (and her man too, who is just about as bad). Wasters, the pair of them!

He's probably trying to avoid snobby geezers. The sort that live in rabbt hutches and think 'they've made it' :-)

Could be the car fumes from the boy racer who parks below you.smile

Not sure if you are worried about his health or the noise is affecting you, if it’s the noise and annoyance sounds like you need to move to a detached property.

There is someone near us who sneezes so loudly that it echos and I can't pinpoint where it's coming from, whoever they live with must be deaf hehe

That's probably me. I don't actually live near you, I sneeze really loud.

same here, I once tried holding one in like some people do. Never again, I was in distress for a few hours, it was like in the film gremlins when one of them swallows some dynamite, It felt like stuff was forced out of every orifice.

A couple of my good mates are like this. When they sneeze they use their voice, so effectively they're shouting at the top of their lungs when they sneeze. It makes me jump. Have you tried not using your voice when you sneeze?

Sounds like we have very similar neighbours!
