Bit of an odd one but for as long as I can remember ( I’m 54 this year) I’ve pretty much always been 14st or just north of .

Over the course of the last couple of months a good few people have said “ you look like you’ve lost weight”

Now my diet hasn’t changed , there has been no conscious change of eating habits & so after another comment on my current physical look I weighed myself and I’ve lost 3/4 of a stone.

I do feel a touch lighter, but not to an alarming degree. My exercise pattern hasn’t changed & I’ve not really lost my appetite although thinking back I have been asking the wife to give me smaller portions of food , such as dinners & the daily packed lunch she makes for me but only because I tend to throw food away as it’s a pet hate of mine.

I don’t feel unwell so I can’t put my finger on it .
There are no alarm bells but it’s now a touch in my head as it’s been mentioned on a few occasions.

Today I ate a bowl of cereal , a bowl of rice for Lunch after golf & the wife is doing a late Sunday lunch & I’ve asked her for a small meal . She usually serves up heaps of food so sometimes I feel beat before I start.

I’m thinking it might be an age thing but I’m not sure.
I’m 6ft ( maybe 6ft 1) so I’m not overweight.

Just a bit bamboozled but it so thought I’d put it out there….

TIA for any input .

Smaller portions = less calories

You’re not eating enough simple as that. I’ve always struggled to put on weight and have a fast metabolism. I regularly weigh myself and if I’ve dropped weight I know it’s time to eat more.

Try an online BMR (basal metabolic rate) calculator, it’ll tell you how much calories you need to consume to maintain your weight. For example, my body needs about 1800 calories a day to maintain my weight if I did nothing and layed in bed all day. Taking into account my lifestyle and exercise, multiply by 1.4 and I need to have an intake 2,550cal to basically not drop any weight and an excess to gain weight.

Thyroid has been mentioned.

Not so much tired but maybe stress so we’ve had discussions along those lines but then I’ve always been a worrier and my weight hasn’t changed .

Wife said see what happens in the next two weeks weight wise and go from there

Tks I’ll look into this tomorrow.

I eat when I feel hungry not just for the sake of it & as I said my weight has always remained stable .

The mention of asking for smaller portions hasn’t been because I’m consciously asking for smaller meals , it’s just because she dishes up too much food .
Typical Irish wife/mother !

I can’t put my finger on it .
Other than that you start to lose lean body mass with lowering testosterone levels as you age, I would also evaluate your day, do you walk around the shops more, take the dog a little further?

Are you due a health check?

It's one of the things we look out for as a "red flag". Probably nothing, might be something, go see your GP.

No I’m stuck at the desk for close to 10 hours and having a knee replacement next month so my exercise is limited .

Wife has mentioned a health check if it continues .

I’m not overly concerned more curious

Get it checked. Sudden loss of weight with no significant change in diet or lifestyle (beyond that mentioned wrt portion sizes) probably justifies a check up.

It’s Sunday evening so can’t contact a doctor .
There are many forms of professionals on there so always worth asking.
There are cancer threads for example .

Not sure there is any need for the ‘ LOL’ but Tks for your input

Yes , I’m thinking a doctor will be able to check with with blood tests .

Will keep weighing myself over the course of the next week and I’ll update the thread accordingly

I'm very much hoping it's nothing but when I saw the title I thought I'd contribute.

Five years ago a mate of mine 49 had the weight drop off him. He was overweight but also pretty muscular so carried it well, didn't look fat as such. However I noticed him getting gaunt and asked what he was doing to lose weight as he was a big eater.

After being red flagged for tests he was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.

As I say I hope that's not the case with you especially as you don't seem to have other symptoms but I hope it jolts you into getting checked over. Don't wait another 2 weeks.

As with all things medical (unless an emergency), it takes time to get to see a GP, then have blood taken, then get results. So actually it’s better to get started sooner rather than later.
