Hi all and Merry Christmas to all Pher's smile

Just got results back from a blood test at my local surgery. No diabetes, but concern was raised as to low kidney fuction for someone my age..
To say I've neglected fluid intake is an understatement - Probably drinking a dozen or so cups of coffee a day, and just one glass of water/squash magnified the issue greatly... Doctor on the phone certainly wasn't impressed..
As from today this procedure will go into reverse.. Just shocked that I've neglected my kidneys for so long. I have a long history with kidney stones and the treatment of, though less so in the last 2 decades as the remaining stones (which with numerous treatments including surgery) could not be removed.. Best description of them today is they are sleeping silently....! The thing is I've always known about the 2 litres a day plus drinking water thing...
Anyone else had similar experiences?
So am just passing on this advise to Pher's, if it's needed, to drink lots of water and don't get dehydrated, and enjoy better health for a happy 2022...

I'm 60 in just over a month.. Don't think he gave me a reading, but will be retested during January 2022.

Ask for a reading and so you can compare.

From memory below 60 is into the issue zone.

I'm in this team too, while my bloods were being tested for what we thought was long covid, the results came back as kidney problems with a reading of 54. They did another test 2 weeks later with the same reading. As I don't have my blood tested that often we don't know if it's a general decline due to age etc (I'm 51), or if covid had an effect.
For some reason the doctor doesn't seem worried, I need to be tested again in a year, they seem more concerned with my cholesterol being at 6.2. No advice on what to do, not do, what happens next etc so I'm a bit in the dark about it all.

Yep - This will be your egfr (Estimated GFR) Anythiong above 60 is good, it then drops in stages of severity, I can post these up if anyone is interested.

Wait till it hits 5 and all merry hell breaks loose - That was fun!

This website will give you lots of info, I was briefly involved with it right at the start. But essentially you only 15% of kidney function (both) to keep you going, GPs are really good at monitoring things and if they are actively telling you stuff don't worry too much.

Drinking water actually has little effect on kidney health, but if you have stones more water in does help reduce the rate of stone formation. So don't stress about what you drink too much.
