As title really. Anyone else have the same problem? It's something I've experienced for a few years. Usually lasts a few days then disappears but is lasting longer more these days. It might be worse in cold weather, so more obvious this time of year.

No obvious rash or redness on skin, it's worst round the ankles and then specific areas on shins and sides of legs above my ankles. Calves hardly affected at all.

During the day it comes and goes with no obvious pattern.

Keeps me awake at night now, which is why I'm posting.

Tbh not convinced it's something my gp would pay much attention to, beyond perhaps prescribing some cream.

If it had only started in recent times I'd put it down to having to take daily medication after a kidney transplant but it pre dates that by some years.

I get this - just the itching, not the burning.

This helps: https://www.boots.com/eucerin-10-urea-body-lotion-...

Possibly exzema. I have similar symptoms. Skin cream helps a lot. If it gets really bad then cortisone cream clears it up in one or two days.

Thanks for both replies. Would excema not show up on the skin surface? There's no sign of any discolouring or skin flakes etc.

It is usually just dry skin. Worse at this time of year. Just use a simple Moisturising cream daily and avoid harsh soaps and it will probably settle

If your skin is otherwise normal, poor circulation or some nerve drama can give you strangely itchy legs.

Try an anti-histamine pill next time it happens, if that helps it’s a reaction to something.

Is there any pins and needles as well?
Any other weird symptoms like odd temperature sensations anywhere on your body or weird balance problems?

I get this. Only in winter, and it started about a week or so ago. Itchy on the back of my calfs and on my shins. It gets much worse if I go away skiing where the temperature is colder.

There is absolutely nothing visible on the skin ay all, unless I scratch too much and cause a cut. Otherwise there is no dry skin, redness, or anything.

It goes once spring arrives and the weather warms up. I've put it down to colder and drier air, and I use moisturiser on my calfs/shins to try stop it.

I get this too. I've got a large pump dispenser of Zeroderma Zerodouble heavy duty moisturising cream on my bedside table that I put on after showering.

Just double check that it isn't diabetes.

This,

I have the same, it's just dry skin...moisturising cream is the answer.

I used to get this in winter, occasionally still do. Moisturising helps but I found the biggest improvement was in the shower - making sure I’d properly rinsed all the soap/shower gel from my lower legs.

Yep it's a winter thing for me , dry skin caused by the cold, dry air . I found turning the shower down a little helps as well, certainly hot showers make it worse

Winter Itch!
https://dermnetnz.org/topics/winter-itch

I get it on my calves, top of my thighs and wrists.
It's bizarre. No rash, no obvious dry skin. Just very itchy. As soon as the warmer weather comes back it goes.
I've found avoiding fleecy things helps me. If you just shimmy about in silk you'll feel better.

Hypothyroidism can give dry, itching skin, together with tingling in the hands (possibly feet, but this one has passed me by). There are lots of other symptoms, pointers really as none of them are specific. The most common is tiredness and, oddly, feeling cold. For me, the most irritating has been weight gain.

I've had it all my life I'm told, but age tends to make it worse. I'm not sure if that is the symptoms or that my thyroid is getting worse. I'm on pills.

I've had this itch and it always turned up in winter, no rash, just an unbelievable desire to scratch the hell out of my calves / shins and sometimes thighs, it drove me nuts and I tried all manner of creams without any relief whatsoever from any of them, then I had an idea, because it always started after wearing long johns I wondered if it might be something to do with an allergy to the washing powder or fabric conditioner which might be leaving a residue on them.

I decided to get rid of all my old ones and buy a few pairs of new long johns which now only get washed by hand using mild soap and never tumble dried with anything else in the machine. This is my 2nd winter doing this and I've not had one single 'drive me up the wall scratch session' since. Might be worth a try if you are a Long John wearer, or maybe even if you wear long socks or tight fit trousers, washing powder contains lots of potential skin troubling chemicals, fragrances, preservatives, dyes, anionic surfactants and other stuff.

Very happy to have seen this, I thought it was just me biggrin

I get this every year and it's truly maddening; if I'm not careful I end up with huge scratches on my lower legs where I've had a really good go at them in my sleep.

However and happily, a daily rub of E45 on my legs keeps it at bay pretty much 100%.

Part of the joys of getting old. Skin gets thinner and drier, especially on the extremities.

Yep, that's it.

The itch itself doesn't show a rash of any kind, but I've made myself bleed by scratching at my calfs/shins really vigorously due to the intense itching!

I just do what you do and use E45 or other moisturiser.

The best one I have found is O'Keeffes "Skin Repair - for extremely dry and itchy skin"
