A bold move and from a health perspective hard to argue against...

Can you imagine the public outcry if they tried that in U.K.

I wonder what the economics of this are for the state.

Lower tax take, plus higher pension costs vs costs of treating smoking related disease.

Here it would be considered "an attack on the simple pleasures of the poor" or some other kind of bullst.

Article says for future generations born after 2008, which seems fair enough to me.

A rolling ban on being able to sell to "new" smokers is probably the best way to enact something like this, as it doesn't impact those who already smoke.

I'd be interested to know how the finances stack up, though again, it'll be a gradual reduction in tax revenue rather than an instant cliff.

Though I think people should be allowed to smoke, drink etc if they wish to, so even done in a good way, I'm not sure I agree with the ban.

Are you serious? If the last few years have taught you nothing else, surely it has shown you how totalitarian the average brit has become.

Which is why I have mixed feelings - more curtailing of 'freedom' isn't a good thing

Aren’t they just effectively widening the definition of illegal drugs while the rest of the world seems to be narrowing theirs and considering legalising some of the less serious one?

I thought exactly the same - stupid idea from a country which on first glance seems sensible....

I except the fact that it 'might' be cost effective on public healthcare 'if' it improves health, however this is a shady argument!

I trust that for the generation born after 2008 they'll also be adding:

Any sports
Any alcohol
Loud music
Fast cars

Anything interesting

Anything exciting

What a time to be alive.....for a bit longer as you now can't smoke...or even make the choice to!

Tip top!

What a stupid Post.

The facts are less and less young people Smoke anyway.

We have one of the most libertarian societies in the world. Hell we don't even make car insurance a legal requirement.

I don’t understand this obsession with wanting to control peoples lives with banning things and forcing things on people. Smoking now, drinking will be next and meat soon after that. Allow the first and the rest come easily.

Why can’t we let people live in the way they want if they want to make those bad decisions then fine, the tax take while they smoke makes up for a lot of the additional care they may or may not need.

I’m not a fan of smoking, never done it dislike the smell and seen the issues it causes with family members but I’m in no way a fan of banning things or telling people what they should and shouldn’t do

We sadly narrowly missed legalising cannabis in the last GE here (by about 2%), though some awful messaging by foreign groups.

I think its a bad idea tbh banning stuff has never really worked.

This. Just look at compliance with mad Covid laws, not just in the U.K., worldwide.

The thin end of the wedge gets a bit thicker.

I get the sentiment, but do not agree with the draconian method.

Personally I hate smoking, agree with the ban in Pubs etc but this just seems totally bonkers.

As already mentioned where does it stop....

There is already a strong ban on public/workplace/vehicle smoking here.

This from a country that just started euthanasia too.

Maoris have a high percentage of smokers [ and drinkers probably ] the Immaculate
Jacinda Of The Virgin Birth must be careful not be seen as oppressing an ethnical minority.

Banning the sale of stuff that was once perfectly legal has failed miserably in the recent past in other countries.

The population who do smoke in NZ is 13 % not much different to the UK.
