Of course, I could be imagining it a bit.

I’ve recently started back on Couch to 5k to build up running. At work I have to occasionally run in boots, have decent Adidas GSG9s.

The other night I ran after someone from the car. Didn’t trip or anything, it just felt like I lost my legs, ended up landing hard on tarmac. Ouch. Smashed my left knee a bit, only skin wound but still quite stiff.

Started running from car today to retrieve motorway debris and it was very strange, exact same sensation as when I’d gone the other night, left leg felt like it does when you take one optó many steps on the stairs, if that makes sense. Just missing a step. Didn’t trip. Luckily didn’t deck it this time!

Am I imagining it, or is this a symptom which rings bells?

Is it like you go to put your foot down on the stairs and it's not there? or more like going upstairs and pain when you stride two steps?

I get the latter, think it's old age.

The former! No pain or anything beforehand, just a collapse!
Seems to coincide with me gently restarting running.

Clearly a hint there!

Running from car to retrieve motorway debris? Eh? Struggling to understand what you are talking about tbh.

Get it checked quick mate.
I had the same and it was a trapped nerve in my neck. Check also you’ve still got hot & cold sensation too.

I'm guessing OP is Police or Traffic Officer.

Correct! Hence running after people/motorway debris!

You've probably over extended it, should be fine in 6 weeks

Cheers. To be fair I’m better chasing in cars anyway. Running is uncouth

Obviously I'm not a doc but I have over extended numerous times in the gym and it has given me the sensation you described, usually sorts itself out in 6 to 8 weeks.

Perhaps you need to get your younger partner to chase the debris hehe

A good GP with an interest in orthopaedics will do various tests on it and might be able to give you a diagnosis.

If your GP isn't good then I'd be paying for a one-off session with a physio.

If they can't tell you then you might be looking at an MRI/X-ray. With waiting times the way they are, I would set that ball in motion early - ask your GP about it - you can always cancel if it clears up.

Thanks all. Popped into minor injuries unit who reckon it may be ligament related. Need to be referred for MRI by GP. So have to join the queue calling at 8am!

Was my thought but didn't want to say.
Guessing they'll suggest rest,

Mate has something similar, used to do a lot of sailing, hanging off the side of the boat etc, lot of load on the knees, now occasionally it folds.

Right, doc has had a look and prodded, pulled, twisted leg in earnest. Ligaments are all fine. Reckons I might have over extended it whilst running and it’ll settle down, but that strengthening exercises could be helpful.

Cheers all!

Find a physio with an expressed interest in knee/sports injury.
They will give you a much better assessment (and hopefully exercises to do to get better) than pretty much anyone else (including me, as an orthopaedic surgeon)
Ps i try to stay away from knees nowadays.

Strongly suspect you could get work to pay for it via occ health bit if i were you i’d just pay to see someone good.

Thanks, good shout. I’m just glad it wasn’t anything immediately concerning but no doubt does need correction.

I’ll try the local through GP but I have previously used the ones through work (part pay, worked out about £100 for a course) who were very useful.

Hopefully you can find a physio who can diagnose it then give you a set of exercises to do all in the same visit.
