If it continues we'll go to the docs obs, just trying to understand this.

My wife bent down to pick up our small dog, before she put any pressure on anything felt a sharp debilitating pain in her right wrist. Since then intermittently she's had it, causing her to drop stuff.

63 y/o
Debilitating pain picking up objects
Intermittent.
Press around the joint no pain.
No swelling or discolouration.
She can put pressure on it ie wash hair
Pressure put on it getting out of a chair can hurt.
Nothing likely to be repetitive strain injury
No out of the ordinary exercises or lifting recently.

No underlying health conditions as far as we know although family history of arthritis.

Nervous about driving (obs)

Any ideas good sages?

It’s possibly carpal tunnel syndrome.

I get wrist pains like this once on a while. It hurts like buggery for a fraction of a second to the point that I almost drop things.

I have one of those power balls and I find using that, driving though a little bit of pain, for a minute fixes it for a week or two.

Edited to add: this may not be good medical advice. It just works for me.

Edited again to add: can you hurts like buggery nowadays? It sounds awfully crude and outdated.

Sounds possible, the symptoms don't quite fit (I know all these things have ranges) but no numbness, pins and needles or weakness apart from when pain suddenly hits. (you know the one it's the fketty, fk, fk fk, one) then the pains gone.

It seems a weight baring thing, but only certain directions.

It could be a pinched nerve but you'll not really find out what it is on here. It might be a good idea to get a consultation with a physiotherapist.

It's impossible to say from what you've described. Could be OA, could be de Quervain's (Try Finkelstein's test...), could possibly be a TFCC sprain. Best bet is to see a physio.
