Why are these soooo expensive compared to normal barbels?

Anyone ever done any DIY to build a trap bar?

Ah. Saw the thread title and thought the OP wanted drinking establishment recommendations to meet teenage boys wearing girls' clothes.

I think it's just his roundabout way of asking.

Starting with butch stuff first but will hint more as the thread progresses.

"yeah, just been benching 200kg in my garage, feelin' pumped, anyone got any suggestions for my legs?

So I was reading this article in Guns&Cars&Welding Man's magazine and what's all that girly/boy teen thing about, yeah, crazy right? Not my sort of thing at all!

Makes you wonder though where they even find these clubs? Do they go on internet sites or something? Specific ones? Bet there's not one in my town. Is there? Do you think? Probably just off the High Street? I mean probably. Is it?

Yeah, so about my triceps..."

You are Both a bit twisted so I'd get back to the dark web to share the sort of fantasy you want to live here.

Back to the subject the cheapest seems to be about 120 quid, equivalent barbels are 50-75 squid.

A squid isn't a fish, barbels are though.

£120 for a Trap Bar is pretty decent TBH considering you can easy pay +£300 for a top make, Mirafit do a 300kg rated one for £119.

At the the prices you stated I'm assuming you are using 1" plates as opposed to Olympic plates though?

Trap bars are heavier (anywhere between 25 and 40kg) and are made of more bits of metal. More metal, more complex to make = higher price. Not as many are sold either.

Anyway, where on earth are you finding a 20kg barbell for 50-75 quid at the moment? And even in normal times, something in that price bracket will be st.
I'm on 1 inch plates yes and I've bought a cheapy bar off ebay when nothing else was about in lockdown. Not great but does the job sufficiently for the weight I'm lifting.

Makes sense that you have more bits of metal required that's welded etc.

I have seen the mirafit ones so may treat myself to one of these.

That's what I aimed the comment at, maybe they weight the equivalent of 70 squid?

Mildly off topic but what are you going to use it for mate? They always strike me as a bit unnecessary; just deadlift with a barbell etc.

Trap bars are great for loads of stuff.

Farmers walk
Traps
Deadlifts
Squats
Grip training
Calf raises

They are massive and a pain in the arse but are very good when you get them set up.

Years ago, I used to be similarly binary in my thoughts, but then I came to realise that almost everything has a place.

You can do a LOT with trap bars, as illustrated above.

I have a home gym that is like something out of a prison, if I could save money then I would and not bother.

However I think they are more versatile and they seem a bit easier on hip flexibility, I am into golf and a lot of golf fitness experts recommend them.

How big is the space? As a lot of trap bars take a lot of area - they get delivered on a pallet.

They are supposed to be better for deadlift, as you are not picking from up front so easier on back, and neutral grip is good on your wrists.

If you have the space for one, and unless there are any genuine benefits that a barbell offers over one, it does seem a better way forward?
