A month ago, my left hip just decided to stop flexing. I had been helping someone move but as they had removal men, was only carrying light stuff. I did have to climb a lot of stairs repeatedly though.

I have been in absolute agony for a month now. Can't get into a car properly - I have to nosedive myself in with the seat reclined. keeping my leg straight and then carefully help it in with my arms! No way can I drive, so relying on the wife.

Can only take stairs one step at a time (both feet on same step) as I can't raise my left knee high enough.

Even sitting down, I have to hang my left knee down to stop the hip flexing. The pain goes right round my upper leg and down over the shin to the ankle.

I've clearly trapped a major nerve in there but something must be causing it.

A&E took X-rays and guessed at a herniated disk in my lower back. I've had two physiotherapy sessions to try and free it but they have now given up as the exercises are just so excruciating.

Physiotherapist doesn't think it is back related. The pain is only induced with the hip flexing.

Now waiting to see a hip specialist in 2 weeks.

So much it could be causing it but just wondered if anyone has had similar and what was diagnosed?

I had something similar a while ago, whilst moving house and doing lifting although my items were items such as a washing machine into a van.

Although my pain didn't go down my leg it was unbearable to sit without a cushion.

The DR's and MRI I had were focusing on my back looking for sciatica presumably but it was the wrong area. Turned out I had torn my adductor muscle. You may well have done something similar if Sciatica has been ruled out.

Thank you.
I'll check out what that does then. I need to get it sorted quickly. Makes you appreciate how much the hip does when it goes wrong!

I have this, but mine is cos my hip needs replacing, however I do get a trapped nerve sensation and at times the most chronic pain in my knee, a 10/10 for pain, getting in and out of the car can be agony, you may want to look at Glute, Hamstring exercises to help, all these muscle groups are closely connected.

Thank you for that and sorry to hear you too are in pain. Hope the replacement sorts you out.
Yes, I’m hoping It is a muscle or tendon in my case but I am also wondering if it is bone related too.
It is really confusing because, as you say, everything is related down there and once you are out of balance, the pain just seems to travel around the place, even to the other leg which is now loaded disproportionately!
Good luck.

Just to close this off, MRI results showed a 'subchondral fracture of the femoral head' - weight bearing surface of the ball joint at the top of the femur.

So A&E got it wrong diagnosing lumbar radiculopathy and no way my healthcare provider should have advised physiotherapy until the joint had healed. The consultant said if he had seen me earlier, he would have had me on crutches for 6 weeks before slowly trying non weight bearing exercises.

This diagnosis took 8 weeks, during which time I've been walking around and trying to stretch it as advised, after being told earlier walking and stretching can't do any harm!

Apparently I'm lucky the femoral head hasn't collapsed requiring a replacement hip.
