Hello all,

When I was but a small child I was diagnosed with a lateral s speech impediment that tends to lend a "wet" sound to my speech.

I also often find myself stumbling over words and not projecting my voice enough, and all this means I end up repeating myself an awful lot which ruins the flow of conversations. I am quite self conscious about it these days.

I was offered speech therapy as a child, but I declined it because it didn't bother me at the time

However, I now realise that along with painting my star wars lego minifigures with Humbrol and trading in all my PS1 games for something like £8, it wasn't the best of decisions hehe

Where do you start? Most of the speech therapy I can find online is aimed at youngsters, I don't think the NHS will help but I wouldn't know how much private would cost or even what I am looking for!

Has anyone on PH had something like this?

Not sure of your age , but sure it'll be harder in later years . First port of call should be your GP , move on from there .

This all day long.

You'd sometimes be surprised what the NHS comes up with. I had speech therapy, the therapist mostly did children, but some post operative conditions and nodules on the vocal cords can benefit too.

Not sure if you were being flippant or not. King George VI never really got over his stammer, he just found a coping mechanism. I have family members who stammer to varying degrees, all have had therapy but no-one has ever been 'cured'

One thing that does seem to be true is that when they are having a good day, ie plenty of sleep and are bright and bushy tailed then their coping mechanisms work extremely well. When things are not going so great then it can all come crashing down again quite quickly.

It doesnt seem easy to find good people to help with these conditions.

I went through it with my Dad last year (and got some good advice on here so see if you can find the post). We did find someone, privately, who initially worked wonders but then went off on a bizarre tangent in to marriage counselling! Put a bit of a dampener on things to be honest. She is based in Leeds I think but can work over Zoom. Let me know if you would like her details.

Alas, my GP surgery is about as much use as a chocolate teapot, I can't get past the online appointment booking system because I don't have any of the symptoms needed and the phone lines just guide you back round in an eternal loop.

This on the other hand, does seem to be useful and many of the people on there do NHS work as well smile
Thanks for your replies everyone, I was thinking that if this isn't the right course then perhaps elocution lessons would be a way forward?

I'm just hoping this won't turn out to be ruinously expensive!
